Question:
Does anyone else agree we're living in a fantastic age for music?

Not necessarily the singles chart, but I think the last few years have had so many fantastic albums and bands in so many different genres! I'm so fed up of people saying how "Music is dead". Which 3 albums from the last 3 years would you use to support this argument?

i agree completely. and i'll tell you one other thing: if we got a bunch of music obsessed people to list their favorites from the last 3 years there would hardly be any overlap. music is just that diverse right now.

sharon jones and the dap kings- 100 days 100 nights

the felice brothers- yonder is the clock

cw stoneking- jungle blues

I think people are too harsh about the music now. It's not as bad as it's made out to be and some of it is brilliant. Unfortunately, I can't name albums because my kids are buying the old stuff, so I don't know any. The Dance music is fantastic-I wish it had been out when I was young. Besides the Dance, though, there is nothing new out there. That's what I think people mean when they say music is dead. The last great revolution was Punk, wasn't it? Rap, to a lesser degree, but that all sounds the same. Don't worry about it. The older people always find fault with the younger people's music. Enjoy what YOU like - that's what it's all about.

THere's great music out there but it's not a fantastic time for it. I live in britain and you our charts are dominated by reality TV. I think iit was a better age when good bands had a fighting chance and major labels took chances on original bands

Music is way better these days, much more variation which is interesting unlike some boring *** "classic rock". I do enjoy some classic rock but seriously people ride the **** out of it on here and refuse to listen to anything because it has 'has no meaning' or 'sounds all the same' man I lol at comments like that. I do understand that there are genuine "classic rock fans" sure but some on there has to be something that floats your boat that was made in the last 3 years.

The Black Keys - Brothers

Mastodon - Crack the Skye

The Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound

all highlights of the 00's imo

no, cant agree

the buisness is saturated with clones who dont write their own stuff, and when the do its really really badlyrically, but still does very well

yes there are still great bands and songs etc, but they get hardly any look in and its pretty shamefull we allowd it to happen

put it this way,the only album ive bought (physically not dowloaded ) in the last few years, has been snow patrol up to now, there are a few i shoudl have bought physically, but the problem is, they get lost in the midst of all that cr*p i mentioned

having the cds is more .personal, than having them dowloaded to me

i used to buy all the time, but its justnot feasable nowadays, most of the stuff you actually want, thats good, is well hidden in the pile of rubbish and soon enough you cant find them cos the shops dont stock them where as you will find the piles of gaga and whatever else as soon as you move

just how they do it now ;-(

i am 32 years of age , i think the music these days are appalling , there was some beautifull music produced between 1950 and 1993 . since then ive never heard such crap in my life.

ive heard some great westcoast rap tunes and G-funk between 1991 and 2010 , but the majority of their backgroung tunes are covers from 1960 - 1980's funk / r&b.

and its getting even more comon , i bought 4 albums last week by a mexican rapper called payaso , the albums are called 'cruising oldies . volume 1,2,3 & 4, theyre all based on oldies ,

you simply cannot put justin timberlake , or robbie williams in the same leauge as teddy pendergrass or james brown ,

neither can you put christina aguilera or pink in the same leauge as diana ross or tina turner,

it would be the funnyest joke ive ever heard

The people who say music is bad now only mention crappy popular artists/bands, and then for examples of good music, they give us old popular artists/bands. It's like these people have no sense of anything not mainstream.

Here are 3 good albums from the last 3 years I spontaneously chose:

Ingested - Surpassing The Boundaries of Human Suffering

King Conquer - America's Most Haunted

Gortuary - Manic Thoughts Of Perverse Mutilation

There may just be three great albums out, but not many more than that. Most of the artist are cramped down our throats from the air waves, TV, commericals, magazines, etc for 6 - 9 months because they are industry built. It was P. Diddy, then Pink, then Lil Wayne, then Miley Cirus now Taylor Swift. The music industry builds them and we buy in, then they fade and next "focial Icon" appears to 'change it up'.

The music of the past was about passion and saying something. Now, it is about making as much money in concert, in fashion design, in perfumes and getting them in movies or a TV show some how. I am not mad at them... sign me up to make millions to do all that. I am not against making money for you becaus you have to look at for yourself.

But music really isn't the same! Are the future generations going to look back and remember 1 or 2 great artist from this era? Yeah!! Of course they will because there is always a handful that will be timeless. But it takes a while before that happens. "Better to burn out then to fade away!" - Neil Young.

You may be right, but I have not heard any of this fantastic music. I've just heard crap. Maybe we're living in a fantastic age for music and a terrible age for radio and music television?

Amen brotha! I'm proud to be a part of this, as you put it, "fantastic age for music". The singles charts are pretty much the same sh*t from the same artists, but going beyond that, the world of music is incredibly diverse right now.

I agree! I think there has been some great music recently:

Person Pitch by Panda Bear (2007, that's 4 years, but who cares),

Ignore the Ignorant by The Cribs (2009)

Africa to Appalachia by Jayme Stone and Mansa Sissoko (2008)

There are amazing bands around today, but the fact that the bad ones are who gather the attention, I have to disagree.

death magnetic was a great album and its just within the last three years

endgame from megadeth is a pretty good album too

world painted blood- slayer im pretty sure that was 08 too

I agree.

Only 3 albums? Probably these ones:

Orphaned Land - The Never Ending Way Of Orwarrior (2010, Progressive / Folk Metal)

Solar Fields - Movements (2009? Ambient, Electronic)

Altar Of Plagues - White Tomb (2009, Atmospheric Black Metal)

And many others.

Definitely. Music's getting better and better. You just have to keep an open mind.

Deer Tick - Born on Flag Day

Eat Skull - Sick to Death

Hawk and a Hacksaw - Deliverance

I enjoy the music most bands I like are putting out at the moment. But overall its crap. I'm tired of all the whiny emo bands. I'm tired of all the wannabe gangster rappers. And I'm tired of talentless people such as Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Kate Perry have cult followings of mindless people who just want to listen to what everyone else is.

Ha, everyone is always so stuck in the past. There's tons of good music out there. Sure, it's not thrash metal or classic rock, but c'mon, seriously.

I don't need three albums, there are more genres and bands out there today than there were in the 60s-80s, there is literally something there for everyone.
2011-01-21 21:01:40 UTC
there have been a few good metal albums this past decade
2011-01-21 20:45:25 UTC
I agree , the Rock And Metal artists of today are really good. Same cannot be said about other genres

I think the complete opposite.
