Hello there,

There are a lot of great songs from the 60s and 70s. So I would expect to you get a lot of varying answers.

From the 60's you have the Beatles, Animals, Kinks, Doors, Iron Butterfly, Stones and Jimi Hendrix. Any list of great 60s music will include some of their works.

In the 70's music began to diversify more. You have the hippie rock sound of groups like Crosby Stills and Nash. You have the heavier sounds of Deep Purple, Moody Blues (both were in the 60s also), Uriah Heap, Grand Funk Railroad, Steve Miller Band, 3 Dog Night and Led Zeppelin. Any list of great 70's songs has to include their works.

In the mid to latter 70's disco came along (I do not consider disco to be classic rock). In disco, the Bee Gees got a new life (they were a band from the 60's). By the way, it is Bee Gees (short for brothers Gibb) and not Bee Jees as someone else mistakenly said. (You would think someone who claims to be a fan could spell the name correctly at least one time).

If you want names of songs by some of these, just post additional information. I will be glad to give you some song titles.

Later,

Hello again,

To get the best glimpse of this era, listen to the soundtracks from Woodstock and Concert for Bangladesh. Those were two of the bigget events in rock history (both from this era). Better yet, watch the video. That will give you some ideas about the music and the musicians of the 60s and 70s.

It depends on what kinds of songs you're looking for.

Drug culture music was big then, and the emphasis was more on the music than the lyrics. Some of the best songs-to-get-high-to were:

In-a-Gadda-da-Vida by Iron Butterfly

Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin

Kashmir by Led Zeppelin

Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd

Cocaine by Eric Clapton

Break on Through by The Doors

Protest songs, usually against the war, but also against "The Establishment" were also big. These ranged from folk songs to hard rock pieces:

Alice's Restaurant by Arlo Guthrie

Where Have All the Flowers Gone? by Pete Seeger

Blowin' in the Wind by Bob Dylan

Get Together by Jesse Colin Young/The Youngbloods

Ohio by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

War by War

World is a Ghetto by War

Shattered by The Rolling Stones

If you're looking for songs to sing along to:

Light My Fire by The Doors

Layla by Eric Clapton

Yesterday by The Beatles

Scarborough Fair by Simon & Garfunkel

If You Could Read My Mind by Gordon Lightfoot

If by Bread

Close to You by The Carpenters

Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond

I Got You Babe by Sonny & Cher

Bus Stop by The Hollies

My Generation by The Who

Let's Spend the Night Together by The Rolling Stones

This question could have a million different answers ... but off the top of my head:

Easy Livin' - Uriah Heep (Cool drivin' song)

Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood - The Animals (It's kinda spooky)

Hey Bulldog - The Beatles (It's one radio tends to avoid, for some reason)

Tangerine - Led Zeppelin (It was playing as I answered this)

Detroit Rock City - Kiss (Shows the band at their best)

Highway Lady - UFO (Should be credited more for influencing heavy metal)

157 Riverside Avenue - REO Speedwagon (Yeah, those 1980s radio ballad guys)

Burn - Deep Purple (You can't help but jump around)

Lord Have Mercy On My Soul - Black Oak Arkansas (Listen to the whole album version)

Black Betty - Ram Jam (This version is still catchy and addictive today)

Bad Time - Grand Funk Railroad (Little dfferent than their normal stuff...great song)

My Little Red Book - Love (Burt Bacharach actually co-wrote it)
