usually people ask, do you prefer the beatles or the stones. that question makes more sense. like buddy said, apples and oranges. i'm not even gonna choose, because, there is no real context to this question, other than the style of rock music you prefer. i think both bands are f*cking awesome. are you good with that? it's gonna have to do. but you do have good taste in music, that i'll give you. Funny, let it bleed is blaring in the background as i write this. but that's just by chance. it could have been custard pie by zeppelin just as soon.

If this question had been asked 30 years ago in 1977, when I was 16/17, listenin' to the newly released "Presence" and tokin' on some gold with friends, I would have commented about how the Stones had "gone disco" on "Black & Blue" and how you should "forget them."

Now-- flash forward....

In hindsight, altho the Stones do have longevity on their side, altho very talented in playing the "old throwback Chuck Berry-revised by English white boys" Rock & Roll, altho their music has "matured" and is still listenable (and I love the Stones,) they have always seemingly followed the trends of the day.

Different people from different generations latch-on to different eras and different evolutions & phases of the Stones...and there have been many. Some will say, "They were great until 1972." Or,"When they finally replaced Brian Jones they were much better." I personally think "A Bigger Bang" is a truely strong testament to their longevity. (perhaps Bill Wyman will play with "the boys" for their grand finale???)

I love the Stones because they were truely a band of brothers, a group of tough guys, sticking together, no secrets, sharing "everything." Forever...and lived to sing about it.

Umm-huhh... NOW-- Led Zeppelin are Led Zeppelin. Whole different story, folks. They are among that short list of bands whose every song is great in it's own way. No Led Zep tune on any Led Zep LP is "not all that great" for any reason. And, you must put in perspective they were basically a three-piece musically, with a lead singer as the fourth instrument. Each Led Zeppelin song ever performed still stands the test of time. If God Himself were to simply one day erase everything he ever created in order to start all over from a clean slate, Led Zeppelin would again come back at exactly the same time, same guys, and create the same exact masterpieces.

It's as if their music was "meant to be." Altho mortal men, they tapped-into a pure vein, somehow. Even now, they themselves may admit they just "discovered" this energy source and went with it. Quite simply, there it was and there they were and they found it.

Altho the Stones outlasted Zep, there are a batch of Stones songs that, if I hear starting to play, I will turn off. The only Zep tune I have ever refused to listen to in it's entirety is "Stairway"

only because I've already read the book. And it's an epic.

They rose to a cosmic level where they could have, at any given moment, looked way down from a dizzying height at the Earth-bound Rolling Stones doing their own special work and making their important contribution.

Chalk one up for Led Zeppelin-still flying, forever.

And "Thank you" Stacey, for allowing me to finally say my piece. Peace.

WOW tough question both have made great music and both are alltime legends! Rolling Stones started back in 64 and are still rocking today Zep started in 68 and went till John Bonham died on September 24th 1980 and decided that the band would disband saying they could not replace John Henry Bonham the band would not have been the same!

So it is a tough choice but i would give my edge to the Rolling Stones! But both like you said are very impressive and just there music alone like the albums Let It Bleed Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin II or Sticky Fingers Rolling Stones and Houses Of The Holy Led Zeppelin will show just how great both these bands really are!

Led Zeppelin.
2007-06-14 08:42:53 UTC
I would say led zeppelin. they obviously ended in 1980, because of bonham, but all of the albums up to that point were really good, however the stones may have made some good ones during the 60s and 70s, they made awful albums in the 80s. Thats why i think zeppelin are worthy of higher regard.

I would say Zeppelin. I think the Stones are more equal to the Beatles in sound, but Zeppelin just rocked. Granted they weren't around as long as the Stones, but they had alot more hits.

Depends on the question really...

I would have to say, Led Zep is probably the best all around band of all time in rock. Plant was an awesome singer and writer, Bonham is normally ranked between 1st and 3rd as best drummer, Jones was an awesome studio musician writer and played many many instruments, VERY well, and Page, also strong studio backround, phenomenal writer, innovator, and just plain top ranked guitarists. Together they were the most solid band i can imagine.

I also felt that Led Zep 2 was about the best album in total in rock ive yet to hear. Song for song, every one counted, i cant think of a better album.

They also offered such a variety of genres, rock, blues (lemon song is just an excellent example of blue, jazz and rock fusion) as well as forieng influences (can you say Kashmir anyone?)

The Stones were definately an awesome group, their longevity is mind boggling. Although ive always felt they sort of sucked in conert. Even going back to the 80s, i can remember going over one of their live albums to see if they really played their music as fast as i remembered. Were they on crank or what? Mick may be a great stagemaster, but im not a big fan of them live at all. Gratefull Dead, The Who, here are bands who knew hoow to really briong it live. They knew how to put a rift in a song that was different and yet still interesting. Their songs werent live versions of their albums, but yet were still actually interesting.

Dont get me wrong, im a big Stones fan, their total body of work and influence is hard to beat. But its sort of apples and oranges here, and i dont think of the Stones as being the best of their genre. I consider Led Zep a bit too different from the Stones.

If you want a really interesting comparison try this one:

Beatles or Led Zep

Thats a friggin hard choice right there.

PS: Stairway to Heaven boring..? dooood youve been out in the sun too long. Just dont let it get overplyed, that can be a problem. The anticipation built into the song is matched only by its crescendo. A great tune. Only possible competitor would be Queens Bohemian Rhapsody.

I hate questions like this tho, cause theres just soo much good music out there. I barely touched on The Who, Quadraphenia is a near perfect album, or what about Are You Experienced. Cream was a very strong group but didnt have the longevity, and had some gaps in their albums. Black Sabbaths first album is VERY good, and fairly groundbreaking. And where would you fit Nirvana? Don discount them too much, Rolling Stons top 100 guitarists ranked Kurt Cobain in its top 20 as i recal, and that album is VERY strong. Ehhh the possibilites are mind boggling...thank god we can have a ton of fun trying to figure it out...by listening to awesome music!

BTW-- Do you have any stones or zeppelin vinyl? I just found the "Miss you" special disco album, pretty cool

LED ZEPPELIN!!! the rolling stones are very good aswell, but you cannot go past the guitaring of jimmy page, robert's vocals and the perfect drumming of john bonham...i love led zeppelin...they are the best rock band ever.....all the way man! I LOVE JIMMY PAGE....have you seen when he plays his solos with a violin bow? that echo sounds so cool...i cant tell you how many times i've tried to mimic it....

apples and oranges. zeppelin were more experitmental, and their career only lasted 11 years. stones are throwback rock and roll and have been doing it for over 40 years. stones for me.

Sorry but Zep never did much for me. "Stairway To Heaven" is a yawn.

But the Stones...especially their early work is great. So what if they are old? You don't complain about Paul McCartney cranking out another album and touring. What those bands that keep touring despite no new material? At least Mick & Company are still setting foot in the studio every few years.
