I'm 12 and I'm currently attempting to teach myself guitar. I heard teaching yourself is a very difficult and frustrating process, Without advice from experienced players, or from a teacher. I Understand Jimi Hendrix was "somewhat" Self Taught. And where should I start? I Feel like I'm just learning random things, that do not improve my playing. My playing isn't getting any faster or better, I'm starting to not trust my cheap guitar book (It doesn't even teach you scales). I'm homeschooled and stay home alot, so there's no way I'm meeting experienced players (My parents would never pay for lessons). Please help me, I'm so frustrated, and I feel like this is going no where. I Feel like I'm giving up. I don't want to. I would let myself down, My idols Jimi Hendrix and SRV down, and Worst of all my dad.

I am a fully self taught guitar player. I have since taught others on guitar. Forget the scales and nonsense. Forget the guitar instructors, they will take you for a real ride and you will learn nothing I guarantee it. Your cheap guitar book is just that...a cheap guitar book. What you need to do, what I did, and what Jimi Hendrix did..was buy a song, study it, and learn it on your own. Learn the chords, the measures, the words and you will be playing in a week, getting better by the month. Don't give up. As a teacher, I can feel that you have talent, real talent...why? Because you are asking this question and you don't want to give it....Get a few songs that you LOVE. Learn the chords, ABCDEFG and all others. Play that song, and love it. Love your guitar. It is your best friend for life. It will never let you down, If YOU don't let IT down! Good luck! And NEVER GIVE UP! do what every you must to keep playing..it don't even matter if you are playing good...as long as you keep playing...because the GOOD comes later when someone keep trying! GOOD LUCK!!!! ---Start by learning the chord formations on the neck, and strum rythems, and the strings that make the sounds in the chord while you are forming it. Experiment on the strings you strike to see which ones you like and which ones sound good to you!

YouTube videos is the way to learn random things!!! In my day, everyone was "self taught", something that applied to most of the influential guitarists of the day too. I can't comment on you ability, your progress or the quality of your guitar book. Remember though that how fast you play isn't an indication of how good you are and that scales (something that people have become obsessed with over the last few years) are a means to an end - I doubt if Hendrix knew many scales; often a good player uses a particular scale or mode without knowing it, they chose those notes because they sounded good without knowing that they belonged to a particular scale. If you are unhappy with the book you're learning from, get a new one (get several). Learn chords, learn some simple theory etc. Learn to do the things you think are missing from your playing. Taping a chord sequence and then playing along to it is a great thing to do for example. I think the players you mention played with taste - something you can't learn from a book and something that, really, no one else can teach you. Good luck.

To start off, just learn the basic chords, and learn simple songs that will help you imply the chords that you will have then learnt. Keep doing this and practice often. Once you think you're ready to go to the next level, learn how to read tabs - you can learn from my blog - http://frombehindthiswall.blogspot.in/2011/07/how-to-read-guitar-tabs.html - and once you have learnt to read tabs, you can start learning harder songs, which may also have leads or solos in them.

After this, what you should do is learn songs that will help/force you to learn more, and different guitar techniques. You can also watch cover videos on youtube, to see how others play, and different styles of playing.

That is all.

Cheers!
