I have only been drumming for a year and I have never taken lessons, I wanted to know because I struggle tuning my drum headsto sound right between the batter and resonant heads

I agree with Creeper. It can be harder to tune both heads, but the resonant head is there for a reason: resonance. There are some excellent tutorials on how to tune. It takes patience, but you can do it.

I agree with Lost_In too mostly, but the way your drums look on stage does not really matter all that much.

You don't have to use em. A lot of metal drummers take off the resonant end, but it doesn't give a professional, pleasing look when on stage. It gives a louder sound if one doesn't have mics.

You can try to get new resonant heads or take them into a drum shop/store to get help on fine tuning.

It really depends when tuning what kind of sound you want.

If you play more of a jazz, or groove, you will want them tighter.

If you play more of a rock, punk, or metal you would want them to be looser.

Make sure you tighten the screws only a quarter turn at a time and make a star pattern while picking a screw to tighen next. Don't just go around in a circle.
