I get bullied a lot at school who think I have bad taste in music which is stupid! It's sort of getting me down, so what do you guys think?

I'm a girl and 16. My favorite genres is rock in general. I love the classics and oldies a lot! I hate pop though. I can't stand the music on the radio station anymore >.<

I love the Gorillaz, Queen, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Rush, kurt cobain, Nirvana, Death Leopard, Iron Maiden, 21 Pilots, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica bands like that. I like underground stuff since I used to live in San Fran.

People are calling me a 'wannabe' grunge girl or whatever, but I'm really not! It's not even that grunge! I don't know what to do... I don't have to prove them anything, but still... UGH

All the girls are teasing me because I don't have a crush on the 1D boys or Justin Bieber...

Death Leppard would be a badass name for a metal band

I'm 31 and I can relate on both things you're feeling. When I was younger (back in 2000 say), I got ragged on by my friends for clinging to the 60s 70s 80s early 90s music I'd grown up with (including lots of those bands, I love classic rock!). I couldn't stand how almost everyone else was a rapper or a pop fan. Boybands like NSync were like the One Direction/Bieber stuff of that time.

On the personal side, I think things like this hurt more or it's harder to shake them off if you already feel like an outsider (I was always kind of a geek and never part of the in crowd), because that just piles on top of it and makes you feel even worse (at least it did for me). It's mostly just the principle. High school is a hard enough cliquey environment anyway.

I wish I had better advice. I know saying "just be yourself" and that real friends will appreciate you for who you are sounds kinda cliche, but its reallytrue. Anyone who'd bully someone just because they like different music (your taste is awesome and much better!) is an idiot.

Next time these kids get on your case, just tell them there's a reason why your fave bands are still popular 15 to 40 years later, and ask them how they'll feel when kids make fun of Bieber because he's dated and old in 2020?

Guess what? You have some of the best tastes of music out there! The music you listen to actually has meaning, creativity, and substance to it- and took some form of effort to write. Don't listen to your classmates!! They've been brainwashed by the mass media where music is a product mass produced by record companies and marketed to teens by using poster artists such as 1d and JB who are only popular for their "pretty faces" not for their talent. In fact you're tastes of music aren't much different than anyone who's actually gone through the process of learning an instrument or writing music. You talk to any high school student involved in the music program at a high school or higher level- and you'll find that the majority of them listen to some type of music other than pop: classic rock, country, classical, rock, older pop, folk, bluegrass, broadway/musical theatre, jazz, reggae, you get the idea. I've been in my secondary school's music program since seventh grade, and the only place you'll find people who listen to mainstream pop is a girl's chorus class. Your tastes directly match that of our entire guitar ensemble, so it's not strange or unusual to like that type of music- in fact you would be looked upon as weird if you walked into the class as a fan of mainstream pop. Science has even proven that modern pop music is bland and simplistic- there was an experiment conducted any, izing music over the past 50 years or so that showed that music has become much more simplistic over that time period. Goes to show you just how little your peers actually know.

Dude, whatever. Music is a form of art and completely universal. The way that you appreciate this art form is entirely up to you. Nothing is wrong with you for having your own style and liking the oldies. Developing your own taste in music that may be different from the modern mainstream is just a sign of maturity in developing your own tastes.

It's deff leppard, by the way... I love them too

Sounds like you have better taste in music than your peers. And it sounds like you see pop music for what it is: Greedy record companies making a grab for the money of gullible teens by releasing crap with no actual substance to it.

Don't worry about what they think of you. If it helps, you can just feel justified knowing that the music you like will still be relevant in 15 years, while the "artists" they listen to will be forgotten long before then.

You have a GREAT taste in music! Don't listen to them, everyone has their own opinion. I'm sure a lot of guys would rather have a girlfriend who likes rock than Justin Bieber and 1D.

yeah...none of those bands are underground in fact they're very well known, maybe not to all teenagers but yeah. And no, you don't have bad taste in music. I listen to a lot of what you do. But that does sound kinda ridiculous when you said that girls are making fun of you because you don't have a crush on one direction or Justin.. I mean c'mon now?

That is some great music! Music you might enjoy: Queens of the stone age ~ In my Head or Little Sister, Soundgarden- Blow up the outside world. Keep on being yourself. It's not your problem what they think anyways. Peace!

Your style is passable (of those, the only ones i in my opinion pay attention to are GNR and a few eco-friendly Day songs (yet from Dookie or Nimrod). yet your style is so lots greater advantageous than maximum different human beings, it may look. i easily pay attention to a great form of song (be it rock or good pop), yet i think of actually some the favored stuff sucks (till this is somebody that easily writes/sings good significant songs, yet that hardly gets intense interior the charts presently.......). yet i'll assert that the youngster you're talking approximately is the only with undesirable style :P, yet we are all different

never feel ashamed of what you listen to. Your music taste is awesome and different. Besides, you don't have to listen to a bunch of overrated bands to be like other teens. You don't have to be like other teens. And again, you LISTEN to the band, that clearly means you listen to the lyrics or the beat but not the looks, they like 1D because of their looks, trust me. But their lyrics is HORRIBLE and no one can deny it. You're very different and I like it :) keep it up!

you shouldn't worry about what people say in your taste in music they don't have to listen to it you are listening to it and most of the music today won't be remembered as well as the bands of past generations, just tune them out and listen to what enjoyment you receive from music you like

There's no such thing as bad taste in music. You can't help what you like! Just like you can't help what foods you like. You either do or you don't.
