Of course, he does. With him, though, it's not so much Morrison-esque poetry as it is a storytelling experience. Listen to "Heroin," "Pale Blue Eyes," "Take a Walk on the Wild Side," and you could easily picture yourself in these situations. That's what the lyrics are supposed to do, well in their case, rest on the music and create it's own atmosphere together. I'm also very partial to "Stephanie Say," because it uncannily relates to my life.

As the other contributers rightly said, his lyrics with VU tell the tale of people
and circumstances around him, living in the music/art scene of 60s New York.
My favourite lyrics of his tho are on his solo album Transformer.

Yes , let's not forget the fact that Delmore Schwartz took him under his wing so surely he was pretty inspired by him , he even wrote a song for the guy
Lou Reed = NYC poet
The lyrics from The Gift ( if you can call them lyrics)
Bob Dylan rules with Neil Young close by and my favorite Lou Reed song is Sweet Jane. REO Speedwagon and Boston could just blow up and not one would care.

Oh my God yes!
Best lyrics? Well that's kind of hard for me because my favorite song probably doesn't have his best lyrics.
Best lyrics: Why Can't I Be Good
Song (for me)- The Gun
