Ringo was the best drummer in the Beatles.

Pete Best is a British musician, best known as the original drummer in The Beatles.

John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison, who were the co-founders and nucleus of the group, fired Best through their manager Brian Epstein on 16 August 1962, being replaced by Ringo Starr. Best is one of the group of people sometimes referred to as "the Fifth Beatle".

I don't know what John lennon meant or if he even said that about the Beatles' drummers.

There were several drummers for the beatles. For the first while, they didn't have a permanent drummer. Then Pete Best came in. After a couple of years he left the band and Ringo Starr became the permanent drummer. Ringo drummed on all for a very few early recordings for the Beatles.

Ringo Starr really isn't the best drummer in the world and he wasn't the best drummer of the time. But, he was a part of the Beatles and it would be difficult to say that they weren't among the best groups of all time.

No, he wasn't referring to Pete Best, John was just making a joke about how Ringo isn't that good a drummer, at least on a technical level. In fact, Best was actually an even worse drummer than Ringo (which is part of the reason he was asked to leave) Here's a funny story about Mr. Best though: He was a bit pissed that he had departed from what would soon become the biggest band in the world, right before the became huge, so he played a little prank. He released an album called "Best of the Beatles" and many people bought it, because they thought it was a compilation album of the Beatles' best songs, even though it was just Pete Best's solo album. There was nothing anyone could do about it either, because his name is Best, and he was technically in the Beatles.

Pete Best - of course without Ringo Starr, The Beatles might not have been as BIG as they were - he doesn't get enough credit. He was left handed and never learned to start his rift with his right, so the drumming always started a beat late, hence making it sound a bit different from everyone else. Plus, Pete Best had a LOT of experience in Jazz - not exactly the direction the Beatles went in. Ringo brought a lot to the Beatles that was new and somewhat immature (which of course is exactly what they needed!)

Agree with Colin. Here is what Lennon really thought, from his last interview in Playboy: LENNON: "Ringo was a star in his own right in Liverpool before we even met. He was a professional drummer who sang and performed and had Ringo Starr-time and he was in one of the top groups in Britain but especially in Liverpool before we even had a drummer. So Ringo's talent would have come out one way or the other as something or other. I don't know what he would have ended up as, but whatever that spark is in Ringo that we all know but can't put our finger on... whether it is acting, drumming or singing I don't know... there is something in him that is projectable and he would have surfaced with or without the Beatles. Ringo is a damn good drummer. He is not technically good, but I think Ringo's drumming is underrated the same way Paul's bass playing is underrated. Paul was one of the most innovative bass players ever. And half the stuff that is going on now is directly ripped off from his Beatles period. He is an egomaniac about everything else about himself, but his bass playing he was always a bit coy about. I think Paul and Ringo stand up with any of the rock musicians. Not technically great... none of us are technical musicians. None of us could read music. None of us can write it. But as pure musicians, as inspired humans to make the noise, they are as good as anybody."

Since The Beatles rose to the height of fame with Ringo as their drummer, he must have been doing a lot of something right!

If you take the word from the documentary The Complete Beatles, the better drummer was Pete Best. According to TCB, Pete was fired just before the band broke big b/c he was so good looking that the girls gravitated towards him rather than Lennon or McCartney.

Of course, there WAS a 3rd drummer, who the Beatles utilized for a part of one of their early world tours when Ringo was out on account of illness, but 'the sub' was only on-board for a handful of shows before Ringo rejoined the tour.

Unfortunately, I can't remember the guy's name.

Listen Ringo was a good drummer because he played the drums backwards.

I'm a drummer and I know that it's harder to play the drums the way he does.

Most drummers, including myself, play with there arms across each other. (Right arm on hi hat and left arm for snare) ringo did it opposite.

I think Lennon was kind of joking when he said that, you have to understand his rather twisted sense of humor to get that he was joking.

The thing with Ringo he was the right fit for The Beatles, perhaps not so much music wise, but personality wise and all that,he was the perfect fit for them!

George had said that every time Ringo sat in with them(yes he did sit in for Pete on occasion)it just seemed to feel right,in fact he was the big driving force in getting Ringo to join the band!

According to Peter Brown's Beatles biograpy,The Love You Make,it was George who called Ringo up at Butlin's Holiday Camp and asked him to join!

The Beatles had a drummer named Pete Best before Richard Starkey (a.k.a. Ringo Starr) came along. John was probably referring to Pete.

It happened either after Paul had put drums to his piece Why don't we do it on the road and to John's Dear Prudence or when Paul might have played some drums while Ringo left for a while after some discussion among them in the Let it be set.

I bet the other beatles could of played the drums better than Ringo :/

john and paul could both double on the drums and he was either refering to himself or paul. he wasnt talking about pete best. that was pretty early though, ringo got better. lennon even used him on some of his solo work.
