Question:
R&P... *SCENARIO QUESTION* ...If you had the power to let a deaf person hear...?
indian dotter
2011-04-29 18:01:23 UTC
For only 1 hour, what would you let that person hear?

This is in honor to all the deaf, blind, and handicap. May one day their wishes be granted for them to have the ultimate gift of having a perfect body.

Many misuse the term "perfect body"... we can all see, hear, speak, walk, move normally, yet we all are unsatisfied with who we are, whether we can't lose those extra pounds, whether we have the most annoying hair, or whether we don't have that perfect tan. Throw away all of those worries and petty wishes and see that those who can never have the chance to even bother thinking about that don't have a voice. They are constantly ignored, and the silence is replaced with our gibberish about diets, instant tans, and excessive hair styling tools.

BQ: Know any handicap people?

BBQ(yum): Sorry if I depressed you. To lighten up, how was your day, dear fellow rock and popper?

BBBQ: *THE ROYAL WEDDING BONUS QUESTION*
a. Did you even watch it?
b. Was Kate Middleton's dress beautiful? :)
c. Views on the Royal Couple?
d. Anticipation of how they will be?
e. Who do you like better: Kate or Will?

Enjoy! :)

That paragraph was pretty beautiful, I must say.

I would probably give them something like this:

http://www.sporcle.com/games/Saulmeister/3_second_clip

or

http://www.sporcle.com/games/Saulmeister/music_challenge_II

* I'd recommend you all to try out the games; they're pretty awesome.

But instead of three seconds, I'd give them 30 seconds, and compile up a list of legendary music, starting from the classical period all the way to 2011. I'd expose them to every genre, so they would have a chance to pick what they liked, without me deciding for them.

BQ: Not personally.

BBQ: I met up with someone I haven't seen in two years, so that part was pretty good.

BBBQ:

a) No

b) Yes

c) No views at all

d) I think they will be like a normal couple

e) Kate. I think I've heard more coverage of her, and she seems like a pretty sweet person.

* In a fancy gothic cathedral in France or Germany or something, less than a hundred people. Good food, good music, good dancing, good people.

Otherwise, I'd have a quaint little wedding outside (cause that's exciting!)... You know, something low key.

I read SMGE's post besides the Elvis Costello thing and have to echo the rest of it. Assuming the question was posted with best intentions, however:

A little bit of lots of genres of music, not just R&P. Django Reinhardt, Charles Ives, J.S. Bach, Henry Purcell, some traditional music from everywhere in the world that I can think of, would figure in to it. I'd take them for a walk here in the Catskills and have them listen to the natural world around them -- and I wouldn't say a word. I'd play Martin Luther King's 'I Have a Dream' speech, as the most powerful piece of oratory that comes instantly to mind.

BQ: Me. I am missing the fingertips on my right hand, which means I cannot handwrite, hence why I am tied to the computer. It is a stupid disability, because it qualifies just enough to be an annoyance, but not enough for many other people to a) realize it is a disability or b) care. I also have a chronic kidney illness, but that affects my day-to-day life a lot less. I just don't buy a lot of processed foods or eat a lot of salt. In ten years or so, it will be more important as my kidneys start to deteriorate, but for the time being, it's manageable.

BBQ: Work work work! Hate deadlines! TGIF though. Now I get to correct papers...

BBBQ: Didn't watch it. Sorry!

Scenario question:

Nothing like this:

People get so crazy over weddings and spend so much money. It's just one day! Chillax already.

DAMN FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS

But I'd have to disagree. We have what I guess one could call a 'disabled' boy (in fact, we have quite a few of them) 'round these parts, and he worries about the same petty, first-world things the rest of us do. He just can't walk. And I know, I know, you can't judge an entire demographic of people by one person. Still...I think?

It's not like the 1950s where everybody has to be perfectly normal (or has to appear perfectly normal) or they'll be shunned. Disabled people are...well, accepted nowadays, I'd think.

Sorry, I'm done, I'm done.

BA:

Not personally.

BBA:

Pretty uneventful. I just saw a middle school play that featured my brother. I'm not usually one to compliment him or act nice because he's family, but...he was the only good actor.

BBBA:

a. Nope.

b. Maybe.

c. Hope it lasts.

d. ^

e. Couldn't say.

My royal wedding?

As far away from the press as possible.

Edit:

Oh, one hour of music?

I'd give them something that isn't too challenging, but isn't totally dumpster-headed either. Maybe some Elvis Costello.

That would be cruel to let them hear for only one hour.

But in the spirit of the question, I would play them the great Classical artists. Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Vivaldi.

BA: Handicapped can mean any number of things. However, there is someone very close to my heart who suffers from thyroid problems (if you count that) that often leaves her very fatigued and has the possibility of affecting her reproductive system in a very bad way.

BA: My day has been fine I suppose. Just been looking for a job all day, decided to come on here for a break.

BA:

a. Nope

b. No opinion.

c. I don't understand why the wedding had to be broadcast to the world.

d. Indifferent.

e. Meh.

Hey,

well, I would point out that many of those born deaf do not feel that they are the least bit "handicapped" and may take offense to this generalization, though I know no malice was intended.

That said.... just like with anything someone has no experience to, I would keep it simple... because they do not have the context to appreciate deeply complex musical movements, and in fact, most Rock and Metal would probably be painful noise to their ears.

I would take them to a nature preserve, to hear birds sing, and streams flow and bubble, and to fill their ears with the same input the rest of their senses have given them. If I was to play any music it would be something soft and wonderful, yet not too deep and nuanced, like Bach's - "Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwHpDOWhkGk

We can see and feel all the pain and discord around us well enough, if we were to give the gift of hearing to someone for an hour, why fill it with more of the sounds of discord that this world offers instead of moments of piercing beauty?

BQ- Quite a few.

My oldest brother has spinabifeda and has spent his whole life in a wheel chair. I work as a volunteer int eh deaf community and sign myself, and by many standards, with my Aspergers and Tourrettes I would be considered such. A real shame that despite my "limitations" I seem to get more out of life, and bother gather and spread more enjoyment then certain users who think they can use them against me. If the fools had half the intelligence they thought they did, they would realize that once one has embraced who and what they are, one can never use it as a weapon against them.

BBQ- My day is fine as of yet, I hope yours has been to.

BBBQ-

a) Nope. Don't care. We have plenty of societal parasites here in the USA why should I care about Britain's?

b) The brief glimpse on my yahoo main page made it look quite so, of course, she is a very attractive woman which helps.

c) I care about as much for them as I am sure they care for me. =)

d) Pampered pointless Brits... like the rest of the "Royals" are? *Shrugs*

e) Don't know either of them.. Kate is easier on the eyes, but I will give William his due that he seems to at least take his job in Search and Rescue work for the RAF seriously, and seems to avoid the scandals his younger brother seems to delight in. ( I don't remember hearing of William dressing as a Nazi)

I would have them listen to Muse and Radiohead. Yesah!

BQ: Yeah, :(

BBQ: I had a painless day, that's as best as my day gets. Oh, wait something great happened today! The guy I'm in love with broke up with his girlfriend! I'm so glad because they would always fight and It would break my heart.

BBBQ:

A~ Yes I did!

B~It was pretty, but not as amazing as I thought it would be.

C~ I'm glad they finally got married, they look happy together.

D~I just hope they last forever!

E: I like that redhead guy who stood next to Will when Kate was walking up the Isle, he's yummy.

I wouldn't want a royal wedding, not even sure if I want to get married at all.

I would at this point in my life ( i'm kinda addicted to )make them listen to post rock. I don't know which songs exactly, i would too overwhelmed if i had choice.

BQ - Yeah, met loads of theM througout my life. Its amazing how they cope.

I watched it. I didn't mean too. But i did. I think her dress was pretty and awesome. But it wasn't something epic like Diana's. They make a good couple. They will be just fine. I like Kate better. You should have been in the polls and surveys section during the telecast. It was filled with questions about the wedding.

I'd let them hear their loved ones and let them talk to them for a bit... and if there's any time left, some music from Queen..

BQ: Yes. Someone whom I used to live near was confined to a wheelchair.

BBQ: Not very good.

BBBQ: Skip. I haven't really been following the Royal Wedding enough to answer.

I would let them hear Lift Yr Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven by GY!BE. Seriously one beautiful album.

BA: Just one.

BA2: My day was good. I played an awesome improv game in drama.

BA3:

a) I saw the highlights. I wasn't staying up to watch it.

b) Sure

c) I give them 5 years

d) ^^

e)Kate

BA4: I would invite guests, but it would be required of my people to see my wedding, or they will be denied their rations for the month. It would be held in the largest cathedral in Sweden (because I've decided I've become the absolute monarch of Sweden), and I would arrive in a solid gold carriage with white horses.

I agree with 30stm- I'd want them to be able to hear their family and friends.

BQ: Nope

BBQ: Haha, it's okay. My day's been good, nothing special, but it's a good day anyway.

BBBQ:

a. The tiniest little bit while I was getting ready in the morning.

b. Yes, it was.

c. I'm glad they are happy together.

d. Well, I hope they don't have many problems.

e. No preference.

I think Pink Floyd has some really great songs. I'd love to let a deaf person listen to them, particularly these songs:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkRcwqxLEuk

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZFvkWZQYao

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaOz62n2eg8

BQ: Yeah, I do. A lot of people say this one girl in our grade that's in a wheelchair takes advantage of her condition, but she seems fine to me.

BBQ: It was good, thanks. How was yours? :]

BBBQ:

a. Nope. All the girls in my grade were going crazy over it, I really don't see the point :S

b. I didn't see it...I heard it cost nearly half a million dollars though o-o

c. I don't really have any x]

d. Ehh,

e. Kate

I haven't thought much about my wedding, to be perfectly honest.

Amazing - One eskimO (breathtaking song)

Something by the Fray, they are beautiful songs and have great meaning.

Something by Coldplay, for the same reason as the Fray.

Just something to help them cherish themselves in that moment and not bring themselves down too much. That is why Amazing is absolutely the most perfect song.

I would let him interact with his dear and loved ones. share stories, tell jokes etc.

BA - not so much physical handicap but someone close to me, who is responsible for me loving rock music is suffering from schizophrenia.

BBBA - My hats off to Prince William for not giving a damn about his balding head.
