Devo were Avant garde much hyped progenitors of what would become standard college kid music pre MTV and REM. Do you remember Devo, and just how crap were they? on a scale of one to one million

They most definitely were NOT crap! They were just fun-but-weird.
They did a cover of the Stones' "Satisfaction" and really made the song their own.
They had several other songs out including "Whip It", "Working Down a Coal Mine" etc.
Mark Mothersbaugh was the main creative force in the band, and he more recently made a career writing music for TV series.

Devo is one of the greatest bands ever. They were way ahead of their time. Their songs are 'too intellectual' for most people so they never understood what the songs were about.
My top 3 favorite bands are The Beatles, Devo, and The Ramones. True innovators that inspired thousands

I remember them in weird costumes singing 'Whip It' and 'White Dopes On Punk'. They tried to come across as a funny punk band but failed on both counts. Still, lead singer Mark Mothersbaugh can be thanked for giving us that great theme from 'Rugrats' and 'Clifford the Big Red Dog' (lol).

Didn't they fancy themselves to be a bit like Kraftwerk? And sing a song about a Mongoloid? Yes, they were sh1te to the power of a number too large to even imagine!

I remember them and I also remember they were very odd. I wouldn't call them crap exactly but I never bought any of their music.
