Of course the Beatles are essential and you will almost definetely like at least some of their music. If you really don't want heavy,try Weezer's Pinkerton cd. Nirvana you also can't go wrong with but some of it may be a bit abrasive. Try their Nevermind cd.

Opeth (they're metal but they have some really soft albums and lots of clean vocals. Once you get past the death vocals, they're amazing)

Maybe even start out with Green Day's older stuff. They're very poppy and easy to listen to and they're the ones that got me and a lot of my friends into rock.
