The Big Rock Candy Mountain was also a staple in my preschool years. My mother liked Burl Ives, and I dug that song, and tried (not very well) to play it on the piano.

Peter Paul and Mary was also a big influence in childhood. "Puff the Magic Dragon" was my favorite; it made me get all misty eyed...

Other childhood faves included Pete Seeger "Freedom City" "We Shall Overcome" "Turn Turn Turn", Vince Guaraldi "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" and "Linus and Lucy" (from the Peanuts specials) and the Beatles "Yellow Submarine", also introduced by my mom. My dad tells me, however, that as a 4 year old I emphatically told him "I don't like Bob Dylan!!!"... I have since come around in my opinion on that one...

The first rock group I ever got into on my very own, via television, was The Banana Splits ("Tra La La Song"), and then the Jackson 5 "ABC".

I have a playlist on my HD that I call the soundtrack of my life... It has about 200 songs on it, in order of when I first heard them (it starts around age 4 and continues to present day), all songs I bonded with deeply enough that there are very specific memories associated with them, an audio chronicle of all my ups and downs in life. Sometimes it's a little painful to hear; I included all the sad-memory songs too, and regretful ones. But in some ways it was almost therapeutic; it also illustrated certain directions I had taken in life...

The playlist would make sense to absolutely nobody but me. But maybe when I die, I'll have it linked somewhere, in case any descendants are curious...

i like the hobo version of big rock candy mountain. i've got a version on 78, ive forgotten who does it, were it ends with him finding moonshine and getting too drunk to finish the song. oh and of course, the bob dylan version of blowin in the wind. anyone who says they dont like bobs voice needs to listen to peter paul and mary and bob back to back and tell me which is better. the one with "good" singing or the one where the singing has a bit of soul to it.

BQ: didnt burl ives do the grinch's theme in how the grinch stole christmas? oops, just looked it up, it was thurl ravenscroft, nevermind. not much else, puff the magic dragon and some songs by the other spinners. probably doesnt count given that it isnt the same band and all.

BQ2: random story: my dad is/was a musician, and so there was lots of music in my youth. but one interesting thing was when as a teenager i was going back through a bunch of his old records i started to get really into this one song, alton ellis' version of my willow tree. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDEYKKiHoCw

and so i was talking to my dad about it and he actually covered that song when i was a baby. i'd like to think that subconsciously i liked it for that reason but that is of course just speculation.

Good afternoon Captain :)

I'm at work right now {about to go into an exam}, so I'm just bookmarking to answer this evening!

* * * * * * * * *

6 hours later: Finally got out of exams and to a PC!

From your list, the only one I know is the Rolf Harris song...

Peter, Paul & Mary: although I know who they are, I've managed to miss them out, musically.

Martin Carthy: heard several of his songs {Mike Harding plays him}, but the only songs I have are those he is on as a member of The Imagined Village.

Burl Ives: again, know the name, but no songs.

Rolf Harris: in my day, it was 'Sun Arise' that had a resurgence of popularity. And I still enjoy it!

The Spinners: I recall them being mentioned on an episode of "Heartbeat"...! Nope, no songs.

BQ2 :

Well, Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" was often on in the car, and I have an earlyish memory of singing along to 'Dreams'. My dad also played Peter Green era songs, so I also have fond thoughts of 'Albatross' and 'Oh Well'.

Along with FM, dad played his favourite band a lot... The Beatles. Many of my early years were spent enjoying the melodies of such songs as 'A Day in the Life', 'Happiness is a Warm Gun', 'I'm Looking Through You', and pretty much the entire back catelogue.

"Tubular Bells" by Mike Oldfield, and Pink Floyd's "Meddle" were also regulars in the car.

My mother's contributions to my young car-bound musical enjoyment are a little different :

'Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes' ~ Paul Simon {entire "Graceland" album}

'Under the Boardwalk' ; 'Save the Last Dance for Me' ; 'Saturday Night at the Movies' ~ The Drifters

Out of the car :

Wings ~ "Band on the Run"

'Father of Day, Father of Night' ~ Manfred Mann's Earth Band {cover}

And for the most embarrasing memory:

'Dingle Dangle Scarecrow' ~ Rod, Jane and Freddy
