Too much music - especially in the "Top" 100 - is manufactured and companies nowadays look more at low costs instead of quality. The same about the Hollywood movie productions. They all make products which are supposed to please as many people as possible or just kids, teenagers and very young adults.

Where do I even start. A lot of modern music makes me ill. Even 2000s pop did not make me sick. Slightly annoyed me but did not make me dizzy and nauseous. It is quantity over quality. They mass produce things. Then once they overplay the music and that style they will move on... and do the same thing again. That is why the sound of music changes every few years. But it all sounds the same. So it does not get too old and they still get sales.

Its typical except for very rare, very rare occasions music is usually terrible and just for fun.

Its why almost every human civilisation on the planet including the Helium totality placed laws to prevent it from being broadcast in public.

No music is good music to 99% of the world.

Natures music that what is made by our creator (bow head offer prayer you godless turdish) is the only music to our ears!

I assume you are talking about rap music. This particular type of music contains violent attitudes, degrades women and has no substance. Most people are listening to the beat. Music of the 50's through the early 80's had meaning.

Because you're only focusing on the mainstream music that's coming out today, and not digging deeper to find decent music. Good music didn't die in the early 2000's, it's alive and well, just not in the mainstream anymore

People who say, "No, you're just old, there's lots of great music out there, you just have to know where to look" have no concept of how it was in the 60's-70's-into the 80's. And we'll let them think how they like. Yeah, I'm Dad Rock. I saw Led Zeppelin for $10, and Elton John the next weekend for the same price.

To commercialised and financially promoted, stifling those with true talent.

It's all about the money!

Time to find other sources other than commercial radio. These stations are out to make a buck, rightfully so. Need something different? Lots of college stations, public radio, and streaming apps.

Terrible music is due to lack of imagination and lack of creativity

There is good music and singers and musicians out there. But you have to search for it and get lucky. Forget about most American pop music. It's just regurgitated crap the studios put out by untalented pole dancers or rap crap. Check out Caro Emerald, Imelda May, the Secret Sisters, Rumer, Loren Allred, Michael Buble Pomplamoose or Chris Isaak take a chance you might be surprised what you might like. You don't have to listen to what they tell you to.

WHO KNOWS? BUT SIXTIES AND SEVENTIES ARE GOOD!!

It is difficult to come up with good new material because so much music has already been written and published. There is only so many ways to put together a string of musical notes, and it is easy enough to be accused of plagiarism.

people just stopped caring I guess
2020-05-13 03:29:51 UTC
Because it's not a skill or talent anymore. People hardly play instruments or really use their voices. Anything gets produced as long as it makes money, and if it's not about vulgar or depressing topics, it's not going to be produced.

Personally, I feel like newer music is more about being cool, gangsta, edgy than it's about having meaning or showing pure vocal range/ talent. It's mostly hip hop, rap, sound cool and thug, gangsta or ghetto. :D

But that's just me...

Because it seems to rely on TV talent shows whose object is to create a one or few hits wonder making masses of money mainly for Simon  Cowall.

Everyone sings to a backing track so there’s no call for bands playing their own instruments.

I doubt if a Beatles or Rolling Stones would get through the auditions.

It may be terrible, but is it worse than the 2000s--when shitty acts like Avril Lavigne, Good Charlotte, All Time Low, and Simple Plan polluted the airwaves?  Only subhuman could be fans of those acts!

It's how things ended up because the industries went bad I guess. Back then it's almost like every song that came out was good. Now just about everything is so shitty. Lol.

I'm calling BS.  Terrible music has always been around.  It's been that way since music was invented.

In the 60's, people were annoyed by new age folk-pop.  In the 70's, a ghastly disease called disco reared its head.  In the 80's, synth-pop came along.  In the 90's, it was either the depressed groaning of grunge or the laziness of auto-tune and the drum machine.  I could keep going, but you get the idea.

What’s your favorite genre. I personally listen to pop a few hip-hop. A lot of Japanese-pop.

Maybe because your spending too much money on it that it makes you lose your appetite.

Nowadays, the only good music is Kpop.

Most of the other genres are total crap, especially European, Hispanic and American.

I blame it on the fact that other than Asian music. All other music was given awards that were NOT DESERVED

Lookup The Wrecking Crew. Lookup Muscle Shoals. Lookup Ghost Writers and Mili Vanilli. Lookup Auto-Tune and synth music. Before the 80s, musicians had to be able to play and sing well just to make it in the clubs where they developed their sound and style. The competition was fierce, so you had to be good. Also, most great musicians like Neil Young, Prince, and many others started out playing in other bands before they went solo. Record companies had more money back then, so they had the resources to develop a bands' sound and talent. Now, they just throw them out there with no experience at all! Music also had a longer lifespan on the radio. A hit could last for ten years on airplay! Now, it's gone before it can even draw a listenership. You have to pay to get your song on the radio - a LOT! The record companies spent millions to make certain people stars like J-Lo and Madonna. You have to do a lot of that yourself, now. Now, there are 360 recording contracts that eat up all the money artists make with add ons for every little thing you can think of! You can't make any money off a hit song, anymore, so most bands tour to make the money. Also, most of the really great artists, songwriters, musicians, and producers are either old, retired, or dead. There's no one to help you out there, so a lot of bands are just winging it with no one to show them the ropes. Record Labels are very controlling and limit bands' freedom going only for the sure hit because they're broke. In the early days, the labels would 'rob Peter to pay Paul' to give a band a chance to develop and get a fan base. Now, it's all online. Record stores don't sell records anymore and everything is about money and drugs, instead of music. Radio stations won't play anything unless it's on their playlist that's determined by the corporate office. There are no clubs or coffee shops for artists to develop their talent and get heard anymore, either. If you put your music online, you don't get paid. That's what's wrong with music and why it sucks now. What artists really need is a union to protect them. The record labels don't want that and won't give union artists work because the union protects the ARTIST, not the record label! Had Tom Petty been in a union for artists, he would not have been allowed to tour because his hip was cracked and that would have cost him in tour sales to take off and get it fixed, but it would have saved his life, and he would still be here!

I’m sure other people have said this below but no imagination and also a lot of the people today have little to no talent.  There are a few of them that have talent, like Adele for example but most of them don’t seem to know which direction they’re going in when it comes to sound and lyrics.  It’s weird because it’s not just the new artists but the older ones too that are making music, it’s the same complaints as above.

If you don't like top 40 music then don't listen to it, listen to what you do like, this generation is so spoiled for choice there's really no excuse to be unable to find good music that you like.

There is always good music and terrible music. If you do an update to your question with what you like, I can give suggestions.

Or you could ask another question like "what modern bands, singers, and songs might I like if I like artists X, Y, and Z?"

That is, if you are truly open to finding good music "these days."
