I was looking to get my first bass and have decided on the ibanez gsr 200. While looking at the different styles i decided on the "black flat" one. I liked the way it looked but i noticed that the pick ups on this one was different from the other, and that it was also $50 more. I was wondering if it was just the style difference or if the different pick upps actually make a difference while playing.

Here are some pictures:

This the the flat black one: http://www.guitarcenter.com/item/expandedimage.aspx?t=4&img=Ibanez/598547.jpg

And here's examples of how all the other ones look: http://en.woodbrass.com/images/woodbrass/IBANEZ+GSR200+BKN.JPG

And, yes, its the same model. Here's the link if you dont believe me: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ibanez-GSR200-4-String-Bass-100463976-i1150632.gc (its on page two of where it says "View more style photos")

The "Flat" one is the GSR200EX. The others are GSR200. The differences in the two are that the "Flat" one has a Basswood body and the "Others" have Agathis bodies. That's probably a push, because they are both cheap crappy woods, however the basswood is a little more costly because it's a little denser and gives you a slightly warmer tone. The Agathis will have a snappier tone. The other difference is that "Flat" has two passive humbuckers, and the "Others" have one passive bridge humbucker and one passive neck single coil. The difference in cost there is the difference between the humbucker (which are more expensive to make) and the single coil. There are no other differences. Play them both through the same amp before you buy.

Hi there, I'd bought GSR200EX-GSF (Green Shadow Flat), I think it's quite good enough... and I also tested GSR200 series, they're mostly similar...... But still different a lil bit.. Maybe not same Amplifier...

The other answer explained it, but I'd like to correct that the majority of them use a split-coil in the neck position and a single coil in the bridge position. Split-coil pickups are different than humbuckers, but work similarly.
