I'm not talking about guys like Brian May, Slash or Jimmy Page who have a firm place as the secondary attraction of the band. There may have been conflicts within those bands, but there's no evidence of them pushing for vocals or not allowing the lead singer to dominate their performances.
Here are some tortured wannabe-frontmen off the top of my head, where the jealousy and insecurity is genuinely visible in their posture and facial expressions during live shows, photo shoots etc, and who have pushed for greater shine within their respective bands:
Gene Simmons (bassist and secondary vocalist for Kiss)
Noel Gallagher (lead guitarist, lead songwriter and secondary vocalist for Oasis)
Rick Davies (keyboard player, secondary songwriter and secondary vocalist for Supertramp)
Pete Townshend (lead guitarist, lead songwriter and secondary vocalist for The Who)
Brian Eno (synthesizer player for Roxy Music)
Angus Young (lead guitarist for AC/DC)
Nicky Wire (bassist, lyricist and secondary vocalist for Manic Street Preachers)
Gregg Rolie (keyboard player and secondary vocalist for Journey)
and worst of all: that loser drummer from the Kaiser Chiefs. We get it, you write the songs... but you're still not the lead singer.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated!
