I'm not particularly a fan of either one, but Don Henley is a self-absorbed, pompous twit and "The Boys of Summer" is Henley's ode to the Prophet 5 synthesizer and the Linn Drum Machine and just more drivel trying to pass itself off as being profound.
"The Heat Is On" is a throwaway song, but the guitar solo is great with a killer tone.
"The Heat Is On" by a hair.

The Heat Is On is a catchy little piece of fluff Frey didn't even write. Henley's masterpiece, both sung and penned by him, is poetry and angst in one, a brilliant call to an old love while getting in the sharp commentary Henley is noted for. I especially love the instrumental bridge as well.

I actually prefer "The Heat Is On" more because the song is more upbeat and more fun to listen to
