I have heard that it takes about a year to create a studio album for a major label, is that true?

Usually it takes a few months - 2/3 months. Depends on their approach. I mean, CCR released 3 albums in 1969 (Bayou Country, Green River & Willy and The Poor Boys)... so right there is proof that you can do it quicker than a year. Many other bands have taken much longer than a year, although that doesn't mean they've been recording in a studio for more than a year.

Some artists, like Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young spent almost a year working on an album, completed it, and then discarded it completely only to restart again from scratch. I would say this counts towards the time that it takes to finally record the album that the artist feels is ready for release.

Then you get other guys like Ryan Adams who release albums at an alarming speed but with very little relevant or even good content.

So really, album time is a vague term. These days, veteran bands will take their sweet time to put an album out (Radiohead, Metallica, Green Day, Weezer, Aerosmith, U2). These guys have made their money and usually will only want to put out an album if they have something relevant to release. Newer bands try to get them out quicker to get their name out - like basically all the bands, save Weezer, that I previously mentioned, when they were younger.

I think it takes about a good 6 to 8 months to record an album it depends on like if someone was recording all year and it was released at the end of the year like September - December or if they started recording around august and production was done by February going into that year it can be released in like march or April or may and it depends on how many tracks like a album with 12 or 15 tracks shouldn't take that long. An album like with 20 tracks that's a long production album.

The writing process is the longest part. That can take between months and years.

The recording time depends on the act. Smaller acts can be in and out of the studio over a weekend or so. Larger, national acts can be recording for up to 2 weeks or more.

The distribution process can also take a while what with printing, packaging, and actually shipping the product to stores.

Tupac recorded mixed and mastered the Killuminati 7 day theory album in seven days and eminem took about 4 years to make Relapse so it depends on how bad you want it and how hard you work. The main thing to remember is that you want to release a product that you are happy with. For instance im making an album right now and started aug. 2014, I dont plan my release until summer 2016. That gives time for me to practice a lot and know exactly what I want. Just set a deadline and stick to it, make enough songs for like two albums and use the best ones for your album, and even if its a good song and it doesnt fit, save it for a later project. Keep making music and dont think about the technicalites cause that stuff will clog your workflow.

Depends on many things.

1: How long it takes to write the songs (Can take 2 weeks - 6 months)

2: How long it takes to write music for a band to play it.

3: How long it takes to actually record it.

4: How long it takes to polish it.

5: How long it takes to distribute the CD's.

There is many more, those are just the basics. But recording an album, generally is 2 weeks to 1 year.

depends on how much stuff the band already has written before going into the studio and how cooperative the producers are

sometimes it takes about a year from the time they go in studio to the time the cd actually comes out, sometimes less

It depends on the artist.

It can take anywhere from a month to two years for an artist to write and record an album.

yes a year is true. But the standard time for record executives is 6 months. Usually after 6 months they get a little worried and antsy and start asking questions and wanting hear material. So most companies believe you should be finished within six months or at least close to that.

Well, if they tour a lot, it could take two or three years. But several other circumstances can arise, like band members leaving or side projects or deaths in the family, or something.

Whuh-oh, a TD asshole!
