What are some of the most unnecessary tribute albums you've ever seen or heard?

This is a tribute to American Idol 2006 winner Taylor Hicks. This is a CD filled with songs NOT that Taylor wrote or recorded himself, but that he performed on the show. In no way is this a tribute to Taylor Hicks. Either way, it's a tribute to someone that is essentially a nationally known karaoke artist.

C'mon, there has to be some good ones out there.

None of these are near as good as the Taylor Hicks one, but I think they're still quite unnecessary.

Yeowch!

What on earth have Blink 182, Simple Plan or Sum 41 ever added to the annals of recorded music that merits a tribute being paid to them?

Celine may be commercialised pap, but she is (undeniably) a well-established artist whose sheer longevity and back catalogue might form a tempting target for interpretation. I might not buy the record, but I don't in any way resent its existence. But how on earth do you pay "tribute" to highly unimaginative cookie-cutter bands like those three that Mike named? With strings? Scary.

From the unnecessary to the ill-advised: the Thin White Duke has had the misfortune of having the albums "Goth Oddity: A Tribute To David Bowie" and "Crash Course For The Ravers: A Tribute To The Songs Of David Bowie" dedicated to his work. They have their moments, but mostly I think he'd be gritting his expensive dental work politely.

There's a spectacular number of artists just, ooooh, ever-so-slightly more significant than Sum 41 in rock history, who have never even had a tribute album made in their name.

But maybe that's subject matter for another question.

That one is hard to top Deke. Back when Linkin Park and Christina Aguilera each had only 1 album out, I saw tribute albums for them. Even if you like those artists, why would you buy a CD to hear some other loser's version of their songs???

Vitamin records releases the "String Quartet Tribute to..." records, and they're bleedin' awful!

I got the Slayer one at no cost, and the music isn't even in the same key.

That label has a license to print money, as fans of these bands continue to plop down cash for this crap... and it's all BAD!
