You can play lots of complicated riffs and chords on a guitar with many different combinations of sounds and playing styles. The neck is shorter than that of a bass, and there aren't as many frets. The strings are also numbered from bottom to top, with the thinnest being 1 and the thickest being 6. The guitar is also usually the "heart", or main focus, of a song. Bass is generally played with fingers in a walking pattern, slapping, tapping, or picking. Guitar is generally picking, fingers with no real pattern, and tapping. A bass is going to be a longer, bigger, and heavier instrument than a guitar. The first 4 strings on a bass and guitar are the exact same if you have the standard 4 string bass and standard 6 string guitar. I play both, and the main difference in playing them is that typically (in general but not always) when playing the guitar the musician plays chords (multiple notes together, sounding at the same time) and when playing bass the musician plays just one note at a time. Sometimes people do play more than 1 note at a time on a bass, but it is a very small fraction of how bass is usually played.



More specifically, in the majority of music and for the majority of most songs, the bass is playing a note that is the lowest note of whatever chord the guitarist is playing. For example, if the guitarist is plays a 'G' chord, the bassist will play a low 'G' note and when the guitarist plays an Em (E minor) the bassist will play a low E. This is called playing the 'root note', and that is what bassists typically play the most. That is the basics of playing bass guitar, but it can be built on to sometimes play a different note within the chord the other musicians are playing. For example, if the song has a 'C' chord and is about to play an 'F' chord, the bassist may choose to play an 'E' instead of a C because it leads into the 'F' chord and sounds different than playing the root note. In jazz and other more complicated types of music the bassist will play a lot of notes that are not root notes, and there are advanced musical theory-related reasons behind playing those notes, but for most country, pop, church songs, punk rock, etc. the bassist usually plays the root note the majority of the time (though with occasional exceptions).
