I like black metal and progressive myself.

No comments saying that it's rubbish please.

I'm particularly interested to hear why you like the genres that you do.

Oh my god, a person that likes black metal!! I thought I was one of the only few left!

Here goes:

My fave band is Emperor, they are fantastic, and I still think their first album In the nightside eclipse is the best. They have re-released all of their albums now with bonus stuff, mad eh? I have The Loss and Curse of Reverence on vinyl too.Mayhem im not too gone on, the singings a bit wierd for me, they are coming to Ireland next month.

Dissection are another of my fave band, along with Satyricon.Dimmu Borgir I can take them or leave them, I like Dark Funeral too.My boyfriend listens to Watain, former members of Dissection. They are a band I plan to get into.Early Darkthrone too. You cant beat Norweigen Black Metal.Zyklon are pretty cool too.

And the reason that I like it? Its hard to say, theres something wintery about it, the images it paints are fantastic, cold, dark, and a lot of talk about the Norweigen mountains which intrigues me. I think it paints pictures, its very discriptive and im not a Satanist by the way.Its also very melodic.Theres just something about its darkness that im drawn too. Thats the best I can do but Im sure you understand what im saying.

Industrial:

It combines two very different elements I love - hard guitars - and electronic music. Industrial can effectively lean towards ‘metal’ – and/ or ‘dance’. Therein lies the confusion.

Symphonic & Progressive Metal:

Outside of classical music and progressive rock - symphonic and progressive metal probably represent musical proficiency/ composition at their finest! A good choice for fans of progressive rock.

Gothic Metal:

Again - the combination of elements that, in theory shouldn't fit together (choral female vocals; folk and classical influences; with black metal etc.) - is a treat! An acquired taste.

And then there's simply 'Heavy Metal' (the 'old school' stuff) such as:

Scorpions (who make serious, fun music - something that is a little rare). But what about Motorhead? How do you categorize them?

Here are few of my favourite bands in the metal categories: Theatre of Tragedy; Leaves Eyes; Nightwish; Rammstein; Scorpions.

My favourite bands would have to be Pantera, Metallica, Lamb of God, Shadows fall, Machinehead, 36 Crazyfists, Trivium etc. I love anything that "angries up the blood" - to quote Grandpa Simpson - ha ha!!

Why do I like this genre? Because you can be feeling real low and shitty, and this kind of music will fill you full of fire again!! You can bang your head to it, play along with it (and lot's of other things that I won't mention) it covers ALL the bases for me!!! And you get to meet and talk to some amazing people, who all have a genuine love for metal... but not black metal - it's rubbish!!! - only joking ha ha!!!

Well I suppose Thrash Metal is my favourite genre, because I grew up listening to it from the start, When I first got into metal I was listening to Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Quiet Riot, and bands like that, but when Thrash started and bands like Metallica,Testament, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Exodus etc. came on the scene I was blown away by the energy of it, but I like almost all of the sub-genres, I also like a lot of the Melodic Death Metal bands, especially the Swedish bands who do that so well!

As time has gone on my taste has expanded and I find I now listen to much more extreme metal than I did as a teenager.

Tomorrow it probably will be Cradle Of Filth or even Pantera, or possibly Tool. Obitury is waiting in my c.d tray along with Deicide. I just love this music. Thanks for posting a quality qustion.

now we,ve had lots of questions on this site about genres of rock/metal wich we like and though i mostly like classic rock, ialso love metal.my fave band being judas preist, rob halford has an amazing voice.i get what you mean about people rubbishing certain music either because they a;dont like it because its loud andjust a load of noise or b;the band look stupid.each to there own i say,rock/metal comes in all forms and genres,no two bands are the same,i love everything 'rock/metal from pink floyd to priest to system and so on,rock will never die, rock music does not need the top ten charts to let us know whats hot and whats not,cd sales dont count for us,rock in any form lives on as the pop crap that is being spewed out doesnt last,as rock/metal does,,i worryabout the future of rock/metal,as when the 'oldies' are gone will the second generation still last as long as the so called dinosaurs, people today forget that without the so called 'dinosaurs' bands today wouldnt be around without the influence of them bands,at least the rock/metal and prog rock bands write their own stuff, and play instruments, yes some bands do covers, but that is only in tribute to their heroes before them.dont get me wrong, there are some sh**ty rock/metal bands out there too,but as far as iam concerned rock/metal has always had a bad deal when it comes to the charts and the media, but who gives a sh**t... i don't!!!!

Stoner metal. I like the emphasis on heavy riffs and the psychedelic aspect hearkens back to late-'60s proto-metal.

Melodic metal would be my favorite. Although thrash comes in at a close second. Melodic metal has guitar solos and riffs that could bring you to tears.

the type of music i like the most is death metal. i like it because the musicians push them selves to the limit and create amazing music. the sound heavier and more aggressive then they did on there last cd. and the lyrics from some bands like Cannibal Corpse and Deicide are just brutal and sick

also, listen to "killers" iron maiden.
