Does Elton John Only Mime Playing the Piano?

A guy at work told me that Elton John has arthritis in his fingers these days, and so onstage and in videos and TV he only ever mimes playing the piano now. At gigs, he has someone offstage tickling the ivories for him, while he just mimes playing a keyboard that isn't actually plugged in.

But another guy at work told me that it's just rubbish and that actually Elton John only ever genuinely played the piano back in the 60s and has always mimed piano from the early 70s onward. He's really not a very good pianist, so he's had someone playing piano onstage and on records for the last four decades.

I'm feeling a bit disillusioned here. Is my big hero not a proper pianist after all?
