RE:

I am trying to get into progressive rock. I like Rush already, and I know Pink Floyd is prog rock. Can anyone suggest some good prog rock/metal bands for me, and some good songs by those bands? Thanks.

I am a huge fan of Rush, Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, but am constantly looking for new music that has the same level of talent and creativity. There is one band that is not often mentioned for some reason so I felt the need to add them to this 6 year old thread. Porcupine Tree. Of all of the bands I have listened to and enjoyed over the last ten years, this is the one that I listen to almost daily. In fact I listen to any of the seemingly million projects with which front man Steven Wilson is involved. Pure genius. All of the band members are great, but Steven is one of those special talents that you only find in a generation.

Rush here. good songs to learn would be from the first album Rush. Here again, is a good bluesy number, easy to learn. Jeff Beck has a great musical remake of a Stevie Wonder song called "because we end as lovers" on Rush's 3rd album, Lakeside Park is a pretty easy song also (I am speaking in terms of guitar and drums on all songs)

don't know your skill level, but Yes is a great group also. their music is very complicated, the classic hit "roundabout" is great. the Guitar player Steve Howe is great. he plays Gibson Byrdlands and also ES 375's.

My favorite bands are Rush and Pink Floyd, based on the combination of music and lyrics. Here are some suggestions:

Marillion. http://www.marillion.com

I'd start with the "Misplaced Childhood" and "Clutching at Straws" albums. Some good songs to listen to would be "Pseudo Silk Komono" and "Kayleigh" on Misplaced Childhood, and "Warm Wet Circles," "Torch Song," and "Sugar Mice"on "Clutching at Straws."

Muse. http://www.muse.mu

There are several songs that you may recognize from "Absolution" or "Black Holes and Revelations." My favorites are "Time is Running Out," "Hysteria," "Starlight," and "Super Massive Black Hole."

Blue October. http://www.blueoctoberfan.com/foiled/index.php

Most folks would tell you to start with "Foiled." I would recommend "Consent to Treatment" or "History for Sale." My favorite songs are "Balance Beam," "Independently Happy," "Amnesia," "Uglyside," and "Come in Closer."

Porcupine Tree. http://www.porcupinetree.com/

I would start with "Fear of a Blank Planet."
