So many perspectives on this song. It has to be one of their deepest lyrics. People have gone as far as paralleling it to the present political state and the garden of Eden.



Personally I believe it's about a relationship. He says that, it's easy to think that you are in love when you really are not and that's why marriages don't last, either they last forever or go terribly wrong. He thinks that the girl he is with may only want him for his money because their love is so easy. But then he convinces himself that she really needs him and that's frightening. Other people doubt their relationship as well and since he thinks that he is in love he cannot see the faults in their relationship. When all of a sudden he realizes that she doesn't love him, however it's difficult for him to leave her. Then he sort of reflects on his own life and wants to know why it is horrible, was it his messed up childhood or is it that this is how life is supposed to be? We are supposed to have faults and we use temporary highs (like his fake love) to escape our misery. As humans, we are always given the road of happiness yet for some reason we never chose this road (the line, "It’s a shame, we could have gone sailing"). If it weren't for the miseries of him and his lover they could have had a happy life together.

I personally think the song is about a guy who is in love with a girl, but he isn't sure about marrying her and having children with her because of all the problems in the world, and is torn between the joy of having children and the inability to support them in a world where innocent childhood games are intertwined with crime and an unstable future.



But that's just my opinion.
