This isn't a response to your topic at hand. Shame shame. Instead, it is a response to this comment:



"Good music taste and/or intellegence[SIC] is needed to fully appreciate progressive rock; alot[SIC] of people are turned off by what they perceive to be weird noises due to limited music taste, some don't truly understand music and see it as nothing more than cheap entertainment (progressive is too slow for them), others lack the intelligence (that was blunt!) to understand the themes, style and the artistic flair in progressive rock and thus cannot appreciate it.An overwhelming majority of todays teens and young adults lack the former trait and are content with less sophisticated and meaningful music such as hip hop, pop and metal."



The ignorance that it takes to make such a generalizing statement is astounding. I understand that you are (most likely) a teenager under the age of 18. But to cast dispersions on different genres of music with such cavalier superiority reeks of a basic and insular enjoyment of music. All three of those genres aim for different standards of quality than prog music. Hip-hop is a primarily lyrical form that emphasizes cadence, delivery, and personality in ways that prog. music simply doesn't. You don't consider the success of fish on their ability to climb trees, so why compare such disparate genres under the same set of assumptions. Hip-hop has the ability to be just as sophisticated and nuanced as the best prog. music - the same for the other genres listed above. Metal traffics in aggression, riffs, and (depending on genre of metal) atmosphere and emotion. Pop is about immediate, accessible, and ultimately infectious music that can still be cerebral and nuanced. To state that any genre is superior, or requires indicated a fundamental ignorance regarding music. Genres aren't arranged in some order from superior to inferior, that is a function of taste, and if your taste is so limited that you can't enjoy every form of music...then don't act like you have a shred of authority when discussing the merits and value of modern popular music. Also, the state of prog. music is an incredibly sad one when compared to the renaissance in many other genres. Most bands that use "progressive" as a genre are just rehashing the onanistic fiddling of the classics of the genre.



In truth, there is much more than you think there is in any of the other genres you are so quick to dismiss. An education:
