Well, do you mean who had more success with their un-original singer? Or who got better with a different singer? Because they're not always the same thing, you know.

Because Van Halen sold more records with Sammy Hagar but I believe David Lee Roth is pretty universally preferred to the easy-listening, soft rock, power ballad stuff that they did with Sammy.

Also, a lot of people seem to prefer Brian Johnson over Bon Scott in AC/DC though for the life of me I can't figure out why......

I think Tim "Ripper" Owens is a very good singer and a very good replacement for Rob Halford in Judas Priest but the two albums they released with him were pretty lackluster (though the live double disc is really solid) so he was good but the band as a whole suffered.

I would agree with saying that Bruce Dickinson really changed the dynamic of Iron Maiden and they released some great stuff when he replaced Paul Dianno.

I agree with you, its pretty much a tie between Bruce and Brian though.

Both bands have had massive success with the new singers, but Bruce completely developed the new sound for Iron Maiden that everyone loves, so actually, Bruce all the way.

Without a doubt it was Bruce.

Paul DiAnno was not bad, but he lacked any vocal punch. With Bruce.... Maiden suddenly went WOW!.

my Number 2 is Matt Barlow (Iced Earth) who is technically the 3rd singer for Iced Earth..but also widely considered THE singer. John Greely and Gene Adams preceded him... but if you listen to Stormrider..and then listen to oh... Dracula? Yeah..Matt Barlow is pretty freaking amazing too. He and Dickinson constantly vie for the spot of my favorite Male Metal vocalist.

I never cared for Van Hagar (and in recent years have gotten fed up with ANYTHING related to Eddie V's ego)

And..I like BOTH AC/DC singers about equally.

I will say... the guy that has been the Best (and most Screwed ) back up singer is Tim "Ripper" Owens...came in to Judas Priest behind Halford..and was great..but Halford came back. So he goes to Iced Earth (after Matt Barlow leaves) and is also GREAT. Then Matt comes back. Can't blame either band really for those decisions... BUT... sucks to be Tim.

Of the ones you named, Maiden and AC/DC are the best, i love Dio but he's obviously not Ozzy and his music with Sabbath doesn't have the same feel for me, and I can't stand the Red Rooster aka Sammy Hagar.

Your list is good but to have something different, I think Warren Haynes has done a great job in the Allman Brothers since Dickey Bett's dismissal and Greg just doesn't sing that much anymore.

You could also consider Syd Barrett when was gone from Floyd and Roger Waters & David Gilmour took over in vocals.

p.s. Draw B.....well said!

Ronnie James Dio was better than Ozzy (but ozzy in a solo career was good0

The new INXS guy sounds really good.

2nd place is Sammy Hagar for David Lee Roth

(and his solo career was good as well)

Phil Collins replacing Peter Gabriel as the main vocalist in Genesis.

Peter was more of a Prog Rock artist, Phil brought them more into the mainstream. That may not necessarily be a good thing but it did sale more records.

Off your list Bruce for Paul-Maiden would not be a huge as they are today with Dianno as the front man.

Bush for Belladonna was a good fit for Anthrax as well!

Of those I would go with Brian for Bon, but in general I would say:

Mike Patton for Chuck Mosely in Faith No More. Technically it's true.

Sammy for David Lee has always been my first choice.

I'm a Metalhead by trade...but as far as replacement singers go, this one absolutely blew me away.

Arnel Pineda - New vocalist for Journey. I never thought ANYBODY could EVER replicate Steve Perry's voice, but boy was I ever wrong!

When Ritchie Blackmore re-formed {or re-invented} Rainbow in 1994, I think he made an excellent choice in having Dougie White as their singer...
