Neither is better, because "better" is a subjective term. I PREFER Tyler as a vocalist, because of his range, versatility and general musical sensibilities.

Steven Tyler
1. His voice was always stronger. No offense to Diamond Dave, who was no slouch in his best years, but he was always a better writer and performer than a singer. He benefitted a lot, especially live, from Michael Anthony's backing vocals.
2. Tyler's voice has stayed in pretty good shape over the years -- very surprising, given his age and extensive history of drug use. Roth is a husk of what he used to be.

Tyler. Because Roth is just part of Van Halen. Eddie runs the band and Roth just seems to be along for the ride. If Van Halen let each member do what they are there to do, I would easily pick Roth. Tyler has more freedom he gets to do more and it shows. Van Halen is notorious for micromanaging things. He replaced Anthony with his own son. Enough said.

Steven Tyler. Because he can still sing.
Diamond Dave can't sing anymore.
