I adore the Beatles, I mean I have around 140 of their songs on my ipod, and my room and closets are decked out in pictures posters and tee shirts. But I really want to find some more great music, something that can actually compete with The Beatles, please nothing like the sad excuses for music today, please list either only artists or their songs as well.

Thank you for your answers!

Ok, if you're listening to The Beatles - I'm pretty sure you're a fan of 60's 70's music.

Here's what I'd try (some of them I don't like personally, but can't omit them )

The Rolling Stones

The Who

The Doors

Creedence Clearwater Revival

Peter Frampton - my fav

The Kinks

Led Zepplin

The Byrds

The Mama's and the Papa's

Cream

The Monkees

The Ventures

Blue Cheer

Some of these groups are NOT in the same vein as the Beatles, but they are in the same decade. I'm giving you a WIDE variety of music from pop, surf, to hard rock. Pick and choose as you like. There's MANY more than what I've listed. But maybe you'll find someone you like and follow the genre.

BTW - The Ventures are a surf music genre that I feel was much better than Jan&Dean or the Beach Boys.

Have fun!!!!!

Dr. Dog is often compared to The Beatles! I hear it a little in their music, but they do their own thing, they're very good (try the albums We All Belong or Shame, Shame.) The Shins are good (albums: Oh, Inverted World or Chutes Too Narrow). Modest Mouse is a solid band, if you haven't listened to them much (We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank, The Moon & Antarctica...) The Flaming Lips are another good modern band.

As for older music, Yes is the **** (check out Fragile if you're not familiar.) Someone else already mentioned The Zombies, their album Odessey and Oracle is good. The Velvet Underground is another good 60's band...Jefferson Airplane's Surrealistic Pillow is where it's at...yeah...

Here's some artists I like, I tried to stay towards the lesser known

Bad Astronaut - alternative.

Belle and Sebastian - light indie rock

Bright Eyes - folky indie rock, especially check out the album I'm Wide Awake It's Morning

Cold War Kids - indie rock

Daniel Johnston - lo fi, folky, indie rock. You either love him or you hate him, but I think he's great.

The Darkness - rock. They sound like an 80s hair band a little bit, but i think they are actually from the 2000s

The Decemberists - indie rock

Elliott Smith - folky, sometimes acoustic, beautiful indie rock. If you want the simple acoustic stuff, check out the albums Roman Candle, Elliott Smith, and Either/Or. If you want the more complex stuff, check out the albums XO, Figure 8, and From a Basement on the Hill

Foxboro Hot Tubs - indie rock from the guys of Green Day, and it sounds nothing like them

Girl Talk - a mix artist, takes tons of different songs and mixes them together in a totally kick *** way

Gogol Bordello - they call themselves "gypsy punk" and are interesting and fun to listen to

Heatmiser - a grungy band from the 90s, though their best album is Mic City Sons, which is far less grungy than the others

Kathleen Balloon - she calls herself experimental pop I believe. Go to her website, myspace.com/kathleenballoon

Nick Drake - folk

The Pixies - Indie alternative

Polyphonic Spree - basically kind of a rock orchestra. They have 30 something members I think.

Reel Big Fish - Ska

Save Ferris - Ska

The Smiths - new wave alternative, also check out their singer Morrissey's solo stuff if you enjoy them

Sugarcult - pop punk

Tom Waits - Undescribable. Jazzy, bluesy, experimental...I'm not sure, but hes amazing

The Velvet Underground - folky, rockish, inspired Elliott Smith

Violent Femmes - alternative, they have super upbeat songs with sad lyrics most of the time. The songs are extremely catchy.

The Rolling Stones and Elvis are the only other artists you can compare to The Beatles.

The Rolling Stones have alot of albums! There's a lot of great songs to discover.

Well, there is a band that is VERY similar to the Beatles. They sound the same, were around during the same time period, and they were from the same place. They just didn't get as popular as the Beatles. Check out The Zombies. You might like them.
