Question:
Live band with no drummer?
2010-12-19 09:31:09 UTC
We play rock / metal and the drumming is complex but no where near impossible, after auditioning countless drummers. Not one of them seems to be able to keep in time / play the songs, we have many layered effects like vox, synths, sounds, effects etc. so the drummer has to stay in time no matter what.. If we can't find one would it really matter? We could just use the pre-recorded drum tracks..

That is a very good point..."I'd rather have a drum track than a bad drummer." I couldn't agree more. A bad drummer will hurt the band mare than any other member and if you are sequencing things they have to be spot on. Good drummers are almost impossible to find. That's why I never had a problem finding work, not much competition.

Countless auditions?Begs the question, are you giving the sticks a fair chance to

show their chops? You're obviously doing original material,so see the situ from their

perspective.i.e.They don't know the songs, where the changes are coming, can they

even hear the rest of the band ok etc.You could be letting some good players

slip past on these grounds.Try a couple of covers (along similar genres) and then

one of your own.PLaying live RnR without a drummer is like eating a kebab sober,

ie.it's just not the same, and the audience tend to wonder how much is pre-recorded.

Good luck.

I guess it doesn't really matter if you have a live drummer or not, and the pre-recorded drum tracks will work fine.

but if you really want a live drummer you could go to a place like a music store or school (or any such as a place where they teach people how to play various instruments including drummers) because most music stores around my location teach students (drummers) who don't have bands so their available and open minded ^_^

It wouldn't really matter, you could use drum tracks.

Sounds good to me.

But really, I'd suggest changing genres altogether.
