With jam bands it is not always the music that attracts them but the entire experience that makes it what it is.
For example a couple that has unsuccessfully conceived a child for many years sits down at some small outdoor cafe. The woman tells her husband, "I'm pregnant." Guess what? That now becomes their favorite restaurant no matter if the food is good or not.
We attach emotion to events. That's why couples have a song. Maybe it was the song playing the first time they kissed or met or even were intimate sexually...the point is it is the experience of people and events that draw us to the flame and not necessarily the flame itself.
Maybe he goes and EVERY time he is at a show he is able to reveal a part of himself to others that don't judge him for think/acting that way...or maybe he just likes the quality of free drugs at the show. In any event he likes the music, the people, and probably the drugs and the mixture of all three of those has him willing to spend $1000 dollars to live and relive that event.

Phish and the audience share a collective imagination. We all get it. Us and the band. Jump in the Phish bowl and they take you on a phycological adventure, through stormy waters to tranquil seas and harbors, then back into the hurricane! Playing on familiar rifts and creating unfamiliar genres, phish has it all. Great music lasts decades, yet always changes. "Hooking up" is what Phish calls it, and every member of the Phish community can plug into each other; just hit play. Fav songs off the top of my head, Tweezer, Tube, Free, Forbins, Moma, MIKE'SSONG! List goes on and on boys and girls. 111 shows since 1996. Follow me on youtube phrontrowalpine. See you at the show my phriends.

I've been a phan since 1994. Part of it the atmosphere at a Phish show. I've been to hundreds of live shows in my lifetime, and I can honestly say that I've never had more fun at a concert than anytime that I've seen Phish -- all 15 times. It's like being at a party with thousands of people, largely uninhibited, that happens to have a kickass band playing. I used to plan my summer vacation around their tours, and I would follow them throughout the Southeast.
Their jams are phenomenal. They write many of their songs SOLELY for the purpose to jam. The songs might not even have one full verse and no chorus, but they are structured in such a way that fans know the songs immediately. In a few cases, the phans have added their own lyrics to sing along with live.
I can go on and on to try and explain it to you, but it would be like trying to describe the color orange to a blind person. You either get Phish or you don't. I'm glad that I do.

Drugs and hackey sack.
Haha, seriously though, I live in Hampton, VA and was around for the show this past weekend. It was funny--local news was reporting on the huge economic impact that the influx of hippies has caused. They had it all broken down by hotel and restaurant industries and things like that. Also, they had statistics on arrests made related to the show. Basically what they said was that it was a HUGE moneymaker for the local economy.
I wonder if the hippies realize that from the outside, local economies look at these festivals as an opportunity to exploit them for profit? Probably not...

phish fans needed another band to travel around and follow after the grateful dead stopped touring (garcia dying) and after phish stopped touring the same people that needed another band to follow around the country was the string cheese incident.

its all a matter of opinion, just like anything else. Chances are you never have been able to experience Phish live and until you do you'll never understand. The experience, the people, the music, the jams all contribute to a better understanding of this band. Like Deke has said seeing them live is unbelievable one of the greatest experiences of my life IMO. The only reason you think the music isn't catchy is b/c you don't like this type of music. Go to see them for yourself and I'm guaranteeing you'll be dancing by the time the first song is over. And cult is the wrong word more like a Family
