A friend of mine introduced me to this concept... i'd never heard of it!... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Answer_song

for example...

'Stand by Me'- Ben E King... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vbg7YoXiKn0

and in response...

'I'll Be There'- Damita Jo... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RNBb7rMXkk

and

'King of the Road'- Roger Miller... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhApYxZisBI&feature=fvw

again...

'Queen of the House'- Jody Miller... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdMISGruB0Q

... more contemporary, i listened to 'F**k It (I Don't Want You Back)' by Eamon and it's response 'F.U.R.B.' by Frankee for the first time yesterday... same kinda thing and i think these were recent hits.

Did you know about this before? Can you think of any more?

BQ: Can you think of any other random tunes that could be 'Answer Songs'... maybe for the lyrical content or even just the titles being some kind of call or statemement and another some kind of response?

The only thing that I can think of that is similar is Neil Young's Mirror Ball album which featured Pearl Jam and Pearl Jam's companion EP Merkin Ball which featured Neil Young.

Merkin Ball was released a few monhs after Mirror Ball although they were both recorded during the same sessions and both albums complimented each other musically.

They are both great albums too!

"Sweet Home Alabama" was the first one I thought of - the answer to Neil Young's "Southern Man".

"Under My Thumb" by The Stones was supposedly an answer to Lesley Gore's "You Don't Own Me".

Apparently the Damned wrote a song about Television (band) on Music for Pleasure, I can't really figure out which one it is, but I think it is this one

You take my money, you slap my face

You take my money, you take my place

You take my money, just get up and go

You take my money, and my ****** stereo

(chorus) you take my money(x3)

You take my money, you mess me around

You take my money, it's not gonna pounce

You take my money, so get no kicks

You take my money, make me feel real sick

(chorus)

You take my money baby

Well don't be funny baby

I can get hard if you make me fight

You suck my honey baby

Don't take my money

I don't need you, you know i'm right, alright

(chorus)(x2)

(repeat verse 1)

Thats pretty interesting. I don't think i really know any apart from alot of rap/hip-hop songs that are directed to other rappers.

i.e.,

Ice Cube - "No Vaseline" is a response to N.W.A's "Real Ni**az"

of course that is pretty common in hip-hop with their battles and disses but i can't think of any real answer songs/records from rock bands...

if i think of one, i'll edit
