Question:
Do women take music as seriously as guys do... or are they just smarter not to do that?

I've got 400+ CDs (for now) and just obsess over music. Read magazines, criticism, etc. But lately it hit me that when I talk about music it's with other guys. Women just don't seem to put as much stock/interest into rock/rock and roll/ whatever. Is it just a guy thing?

No it's not just a guy thing. My husband isn't in to music but I am with a passion and have always been. I have approx. 800 33 rpm vinyls, almost 200 '45's, a few '78's and about 625 cds. I take my music very very seriously.

My music has it's own dedicated room in my house.

I don't know how many girls you know but it is clear that you have never met me. I'm more into music (rock n roll/hard rock/hair metal) than any guy I've ever met (excluding this website). I think that is a rather sexist comment to make, actually.

Since we are on the topic of women not taking things as serious as guys do... I race motocross, work on cars, weld AND have been boxing for a couple months now so hows that for your theory? Maybe not every girl takes certain things serious but let me assure you, many guys I know don't take things very serious either.

Don't be ridiculous. Both genders can be totally into music. I'm totally into music. It's my life. I couldn't live without metal.

I talk about my music with both sexes. Why is it always the same thing about guys taking subjects more seriously and women being redundant and do nothing? That's never the case. You can't seriously think rock is just a guy thing >:(

Dude you ain't alone. I obsess over music and I'm a girl especially Rock and especially Evanescence.

(They're AMAZING***) I have a friend in my class. We're really close and if anybody who doesnt like rock says even one thing bad about Linkin Park she will freak out. She has all their articles, pictures and albums. She has a room of Cds and magazines and articles all to do with Rock music.

I don't bother with the music magazines anymore, but I do take my music *very* seriously!

The rest of my family seem to find me rather odd because of it, but music is the one area I have any real knowledge of, and I love learning more about it.

Being on here is the only chance I get to discuss music with people, and I find there are a lot of knowledgeable fellow females in the R&P section!

It is definatly not just a guy thing!

Well, in my case, I blame my parents. (I'm 16) They took me to shows when I was young, and I grew up listening to The Offspring, Def Leppard, Green Day, and Depeche Mode.

We have 700+ cds, 40+ records, and I've been to around 18 concerts.

My first concert was The Beach Boys, and since then, (I wanna say that was in '97) I've seen Blink 182, Def Leppard twice, Green Day twice, No Doubt, HIM, Taking Back Sunday, B52's, Devo (my dad's request), Go-Go's, My Chemical Romance, and some more.

I usually end up spending my Saturday mornings at this grungy cd show that my dad found, and after I obviously do stuff with my firends.

But, yeah, I love music!

Dude, Music is my life...I know just about everything about all my favourite bands, i could tell you the birthday of the rythm guitarist for Guns N' Roses (Izzy Stradlin 8th April). I love rock n' roll, and rock music ! I play the guitar and the drums.

I think it is more a guy thing. I am a huge music geek, but I find I can't talk about music with other girls; guys are more on my level.

I have no idea why though..... I have thought about this a lot! Good question!

Depends on the music and the girls your tryin to talk to

(same goes for the dude up top who said the same about sports)

I usually start the music/sports convo with my hubby - he loves music as much as i do, but i had to get him interested in sports...haha!

Well, all women are different, so it is hard to group them like that. With that said, I am the only one of my friends who is as intrested and passionate about music/rock/concerts/ect. I have to beg them to go to shows with me! Maybe your're just not talking to the right girls about music because I know some girls on here are just like how you described yourself.

Music is probably the one thing I do take seriously, and I plan on making it part of my livelihood. I might be too into it. Who knows.

I will admit that I don't have many girl friends that are as into music as me, but I guess it just depends. I also know guys who are into music as much as I am. It's just a passion of mine that some people don't share.

It's got nothing to do with gender.

I am living proof that SOME women take their music seriously. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say that there are more men than women who are as into their collection as others. BUT, every once in a while, you will stumble across some bada.s.s. chicks (such as myself) who could take you one on one in a metal war of the words anyday. lol

I have some girlfriends.. ( not ones I'm dating) who I can discuss metal with. I guess it's because for the most part my imediate friends like the same music as me.

Interest in music is not just a guy thing.

maybe you just haven't met the right girls yet. ;)

however, i DO believe that girls can be less competative

about their knowledge and perhaps less likely to discuss

what they listen to and what they've read about it.

Guys like music. Girls like guys that do music. I have no idea why, but that seems to be the case.
