Hello there,

Buying all new gear and staying under $200 is tough. A good amp is going to eat up at least half your budget. Most beginners under estimate the importance of the amp and speakers in how they will sound. A good amp is vital to having a good sound, even at the beginner level.

I think a Fender Mustang I is a good choice of amps. They run around $110. This is a digital modeling amp with the sounds of several classic amps programmed in. That means is versatile. It has several effects built in. That saves you the cost of buying separate effects pedals. A few separate effects pedals could cost you more than what a Mustang I costs. It is a very good choice for a beginner amp.

The Squier Bullet is a decent quality beginner guitar. At its price, it would be hard to beat.

In general Squier Strats are decent quality. Sure they are not as good as a Fender Strat. But a Fender Strat MIM costs $500. So you would expect the Fender Strat to be better than a Squier. But when you compare a Squier Strat to other guitars similarly priced, the Squier is about as good as any.

One note about the guitars you have listed. All the Strats have a tremolo bridge. That means they have a whammy bar. The Telecaster does not. It is a fixed bridge guitar. If you want a whammy bar, you need to go with one of the Strats.

Go with any Strat style, and I suggest a small amp by a decent name like Fender also.

Best of luck to you!

Hey bro slow it down. You have all these big ideas about what you're going to play but you can't even do a chord yet. You'll need to practice first.

Okay I see you're set on Squier pretty much. Here's some disappointment for you. Two hundred dollars will not really get you a great guitar let alone a great guitar + amp. Squier is also not a brand with a great reputation. If I were you I would spend all the $200 (or even save a bit more) on the guitar and then just save up for the amp. I say this because sometimes these $200> guitars are not so well made and that can be frustrating to learn on... like the tremolo system can be hard to keep in tune or the tuning pegs are not very strong meaning you lose tune easily.

Another tip for you is do not get a guitar with a tremolo system because that's an advanced thing to play with and you're a beginner and more importantly they can be a hassle to maintain especially on cheaper guitars.

Below I'll list some of the guitars I think I would have chosen in your situation (if $200 was my absolute limit):

This one is 2nd hand but listen this is a good deal because this guitar would go for like $300 - $400 easy. The shop will have maintained it and repaired any damages. At most you'll have a few cosmetic scratches and bumps. This would be my best choice.

In fact I honestly think you would be better off browsing eBay and looking for a 2nd hand guitar. It would honestly be a better buy. Like I said most of the time the only damage may be some faded paint or scratches. Just make sure the seller has a good reputation and it lists all the details about the guitar.

As for amps even if you go 2nd hand the great amps are expensive as hell. So I recommend you aim for like $150 or so for the amp.

I personally recommend the last one.

Honestly, Squires are crap. I love Strats, but if you want a strat, save up your cash, and buy a Fender Standard (MIM) Strat. They cost around $500.

For a starter instrument, I highly suggest not going with a guitar that costs under $350 as anything under $200 is going to have issues holding its tuning and may have other issues whether it be construction or wiring issues.

My first guitar teacher told me a long time ago, that Its better to invest in a decent instrument that you'll be happy with for a long time as opposed to a cheap guitar that doesn't stay in tune. Its way harder to keep focus when you do a string bend and have to stop to re-tune every time you do it,

I'd suggest going with either a Fender Standard Strat, an Epiphone Les Paul, or a PRS SE custom 24.

As for an amp, (I hate saying this...but) Line 6 has some cheap amps, and Orange has their CrushPIX line. You should be able to get an amp for under $100.

Buy the 200 $ one.

Its the best.
