Am I the only who thinks he is EXTREMELY overrated? I really want a serious answer as to why everyone thinks he's so good...
Everyone is blown away by his guitar playing because theres "feeling". Well, Im sure every guitarist plays with feeling, thats what the instrument is meant for. I think he's being over hyped by these kids just because he's "unique' and try's to be "cool", IMO.
And when people say "The jimmy Page of out generation" is complete BS. Jack White is so sloppy when he plays.

I'm not a fan of The White Stripes tbh, but i like his other bands The Raconteurs and Dead Weather for the cool music and lyrics.

I think he is extremely over the top criminally overrated. I personally don't like what the White Stripes did, specially Jack White. I tried to think why he is usually regarded as the best new guitarist and one of the all time best and really, the only reason I can think about is that the White Stripes, and especially Jack, tried to go back to rock basics. They went all the way to the 50s and 60s and revisited the whole blues rock thing that died a very long time ago with Clapton and other artists.

Basically blues rock is lead by a great guitarist and the very reason of this genre is the improv it requires by its lead guitarist and the rest of the band. Since the "rest" of the band is a crappy drummer, then Jack is the lead band member. The only band I can think of that played a very fair amount of blues in the last 10 years was The White Stripes, and at the same time achieved critical commercial success with other kind of songs.

This means to the music listeners of "nowadays" that are only drooling for mainstream alt. rock hits, the blues of the White Stripes came as such an awe.

I think Jack can play guitar, but as to be elected the best guitarist since Jimmy Page is pure bulls*it and unfair.

If music listeners who are all over the commercial radio hits go back to the 60s and 70's and check out Ten Years After, Cream, Allman Brothers Band, Creedence Clearwater Revival and tons other and Led Zeppelin's "deep, underground and unknown" catalog, then they should know what a guitar player really is about.

There's more to being a musician than technical proficiency. Of course one has to have some technique in order to communicate that which one wants to communicate but the other side of that is that there has to be something there to communicate. There are dozens of guitarists who can do lightning licks with great accuracy but without any substance - boring.

I think the reason why so many people like him is not only his 'feeling' but his overall sound. He doesn't just go for the newest gadget but carefully creates a unique sound for his own purposes.

Personally I think the whole idea of 'rating' a guitarist is overrated. The whole idea of music being a competition is so off the mark. Either it moves you or it doesn't - the rest is irrelevant.

I like what sexy tuba said. (damn it, he said it so much more succinctly than I could)

P.S. - What's with everyone ripping on Meg? So what if she isn't the greatest drummer: 1) the question is about Jack's guitar playing and 2) if the shoe fits, wear it (that means that it worked for those who can't understand figurative meaning)

Yes Jack White is overrated. He is a sloppy guitar player live, and his riffs are rip offs on "Boom Boom Boom"-John Lee Hooker....and other places he rips off with his common 3 chord progression. He doesn't seem to evolve as a musician, and his excuse is that he is a "too cool" experimental musician.Let me recap this...Jack White is in his late 20s if not already 30 years old and he hasn't developed out of the phase of playing 3 chord mediocre riffs. Its not hard to make a song hook either and repeat it over and over and over...most guitarists grow out of the "experimental" phase in their mid twenties and develop their own style to compose music that is not based around 3 little chords. If you think Im just some amateur guy rambling on,im not..im 26 years old and heres my music :

i'm not a extensive Raconteurs fan, in my opinion. interior sight college rock station performs them nonstop and that i'm notably ill of them. i'm into the greater moderen stuff top now...Paramore, Fall Out Boy, The Bravery, The commencing Line, upward thrust against...etc. Led Zep is marvelous :)

Sloppy is their style. They play sloppy, bluesy, angsty rock. I like it and so do a ton of other people. He is a great guitar player and an all around great musician.

Pretty much.

He's good, but nothing phenomenal. And his voice is terrible.

I remember people gushing about him endlessly mid-decade ago, but I haven't heard a thing from him since.

Meg White is worse in my opinion. her drumming is pure slop, when you play The White Stripes on any media player you literally get slop pouring out of your speakers. by the time it's over you could feed a whole prison full of inmates with what's left over. take a look at this http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.fooyoh.com/_data/patpoh/images/20070925/meg-white-sex-tape-01.jpg&imgrefurl=http://patpoh.fooyoh.com/patpoh/entry/Meg-White-has-a-sex-tape-&usg=__VqdJiKTqZEfSALDLWMNn7rUTqPU=&h=1606&w=2048&sz=354&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=2VLVtH6S4WSSEM:&tbnh=115&tbnw=150&ei=5KFJTYyrGYqr8Aaw9-GaDg&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dmeg%2Bwhite%2Bpictures%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DX%26biw%3D1263%26bih%3D553%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=141&oei=5KFJTYyrGYqr8Aaw9-GaDg&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=26&ved=1t:429,r:7,s:0&tx=70&ty=64

I think she would make a better porn star than a drummer.
