Who do you prefer, Syd Barrett or David Gilmour? Do you think Pink Floyd would have been terribly different if Syd never left the band?

Personally, I prefer David Gilmour. Syd Barrett played a very special role in shaping the band for the future, but I don't think the group would have reached nearly the same success with Syd still as their frontman. Though without him ever being there, I doubt things would have turned out the same way. The whole band coming together the way it did was a chain of events in which if it had happened any other way, it would have been completely different.

Though Roger wrote most (I could almost say all) Pink Floyd songs, David co-wrote some of the biggest tracks off The Wall like Young Lust, Comfortably Numb, and Run Like Hell. He has played quite a crucial role in the band over the years.

Syd's departure from the band paved the way for an important new leader to rise- and that would be Roger Waters. Every song he writes is just a masterpiece. Though this may be, I don't think he could have done it without David. Just watch this video and you'll see what I mean:

David's soft melodic voice flows so naturally with Roger's dark vocals. I can't explain it any other way but- magical.

David Gilmour.

Yes, Floyd would have been different. They really struggled songwriting wise after Syd left, because he did basically all of that. I think it was a great learning process for Gilmour/Waters/Wright in terms of songwriting, and it made them a stronger, more well rounded band.

Syd Barrett, only because I'm looking at this question from a fangirl point of view and I am in love with him. <3 I think he's absolutely gorgeous and beautiful and GENIUS. I love his style of songs but musical-wise I'd go with David. I still think Floyd would have been famous with Syd and not David, but their music... would have been WAY different/

My in demand album is dark portion of the Moon even although that's observed especially heavily via The Wall. My in demand pink Floyd song (and my in demand song over-all) is "wish You have been right here".

My in demand album is dark area of the Moon besides the undeniable fact that it somewhat is accompanied noticeably heavily via The Wall. My in demand purple Floyd music (and my in demand music over-all) is "want You have been right here".
