When listening to music, other than lyrics, I also appreciate the instrumentals that musicians can create. So, I have a few favorite ones which I think R&P will enjoy:

Angel Eyes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVyfLUa-hdo

Blue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzW8fi8z5C8&feature=related

Vivaldi's Four Seasons Summer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgPbcejfNR8&feature=related

How about getting R&P to share their favorites?
BQ: What are some instrumental bands you know about?

Well if you want to include Classical and Jazz this question just got a lot broader. :P I'll throw down a bit from each etc.

Classical:

Bach

Mozart

Beethoven

Chopin

Ravel

Debussy

Stravinsky

Bartok

Steve Reich (Music for 18 Musicians)

Jazz:

Miles Davis

John Coltrane

Charles Mingus

Herbie Hancock

Pat Metheny Group (esp. The Way Up album)

... all the fusion I recommended on the other Q

Rock/other:

Gordian Knot (first album)

Planet X (Quantum album)

Happy the Man (anything by them)

Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Fracture, and many others by King Crimson

Most of Hot Rats, The Grand Wazoo and a ton more (Black Napkins is a great tune) by Frank Zappa

Blues for Salvador by Santana... really amazing guitar tune

Infinite Space - Emerson, Lake & Palmer

Also a couple tunes by me:

:o 8)

I could go on as my favorite music ever is often instrumental, but I'll leave it there for now.

BQ: Yeah I forgot to mention Pelican and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Tortoise, etc... check out that stuff too.

A more peaceful one:

Song for Lynette - Eric Johnson

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7O_jGuDD1H4

A more intense one:

Stream of Consciousness - Dream Theater

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3c1rrqj_kY (1/2)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y29GK7V1Gjw&feature=related (2/2)

BQ: I don't know too many instrumental bands. Just a lot of instrumental guitarists. Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Marty Friedman, David T Chastain, Neil Zaza, etc. Although I do know of one called The Liquid Tension Experiment which is basically Dream Theater members minus the vocalist.

WTF, Cricket has its own category?

Lol well anyway, this is right up my alley... I'm always listening to instrumentals and that so-called neo-classical metal stuff (I've actually been criticized by other metalheads, stating that I'm into "guitar clinic music"). Personally I Idolize Mike Varney (the record producer behind Shrapnel records), since he is responsible for finding and funding talent like Yngwie, Greg Howe, Paul Gilbert, Marty Friedman and Jason Becker, UFO (Michael Schenker and Vinnie Moore have become some of my favorites)... and he's produced stuff for OHMphrey (with ex-Megadeth virtuoso Chris Poland) and Alex Skolnick Trio.

Sorry, got carried away... I'll just put some links now, lol
