Question:
R&P: Have you ever done anything musically related in a non-musical class?

Last year in English, we did a whole unit on Beatles poetry. It was awesome. We interpreted "A Day in the Life," "Maxwell's Silver Hammer," "Fool on the Hill," and others.

We also watched Across the Universe near the end of the year.

And, we watched "Dark Side of the Rainbow." -- where you mute the Wizard of Oz, and play Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon over it. There was no educational point in watching it, but it was still really cool, haha.

Also -- before every class, my teacher would pick a song that related to what we had for homework. She picked the BEST songs: stuff from CCR, the Doors, the Beatles, etc.

So, have you?

In my global class last year my teacher would always relate what was going on in the year to the music that was being produced. It was pretty cool. :)

This year in English we had to write an essay about either two literary works or movies. I asked my teacher if I could do 2 albums instead and he said yep.

We were in English class and while reading this short story thing, the teacher played The Who.

It took place in the '60s/'70s, so she was setting the mood. But after we were done we had to get into groups to discuss, and some kid started complaining about the lame '50s music... I corrected him and shook my head... ugh...

Also in AP US history last year when we studied the '60s we did a lot of interpreting war protest songs, so we got to listen to Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, Country Joe and the Fish... it was cool. Then when we studied the '80s, our teacher played song clips and had us guess the artists, and I kept getting almost all of them because I'm just that good, and the rest of my class was just that awful...

Yeah, my fifth grade teacher was awesome. She would play the Beatles, the Grateful Dead and Jimi Hendrix in class. Every day in the morning, that is how we would start out. And she was a teenager back in the 60's, so she would tell us all about her experiences at concerts, and the like... I envy her.

Oh, and in art class in 6th grade, we were listening to some hillybilly country radio station and Smack That came on. Everyone got up and started dancing to it. I was forever scarred, but not as bad as I imagine you are, ICSFM. I feel so sorry for you. One of my friends sings HSM every day, it gets on my nerves.

Oh, what I wouldn't give to have that teacher as one of my teachers... she sounds so incredibly awesome.

Sailing Outdoors, that is my favorite song. I want to do an interpretation of that now. :P

Citizen King, I have one too, I know what you mean. I find the internet feature practically useless now because I don't like to type with it.

I did a report about Led Zeppelin in 7th grade.

Also last year for English I read a Pink Floyd song because we were doing poetry. I decided to be funny and chose Happiest Days Of Our Lives/Another Brick In The Wall Part 2.

A few times that I remember. My freshman year of high school, we read West Side Story, and between the scenes we listened to some of the songs from the musical. And in an English class in college, we were reading Edgar Allan Poe's story Murders in the Rue Morgue and we listened to the Iron Maiden song of the same name when we talked about it in our discussion section.

English lends itself nicely to music. :)

I had to write a paper for my AP history class on anything I liked...so, of course, I wrote it on the Beatles.

Once, years ago, I had to choose a song and read it to the class--a poetry unit.

The best was having to draw caricatures for an art class--I drew Freddie Mercury.

Edit: Forgot to answer the MQ! So...Another Brick In the Wall, Part II...we don't need no education

Yeah, last year I read a Devin Townsend song to the class because I was told to "Expose the Class To Canadian Art"! It was great!

I also wrote a small bio on Townsend because, well, Canadian art is important to me!

I also shared "Sweating Bullets" by Megadeth with the class because its about schizophrenia, which is an eye opener when its not familiar to people...

MQ: Smoking In the Boys Room! haha well its not appropriate but its fun!

Also, if we wrote poetry and tried putting it to music, we would get extra marks!! I received an extra 5% on my report card for it! I was actually the only kid who did that though...
