It's all completely subjective, and based on context.
I can say that if Jimi Hendrix hadn't been doing what he was doing in the 60s, so many guitarists that followed him would perhaps never have been the same. He was a pioneer in terms of his wild-sounding guitar style, a style that was such a beautiful balance of chaos and order. In his time, he was the best for sure (or at least I subjectively think so...), and everyone that followed him had the advantage of being able to learn from him.
Out of the guitarists that you listed, Eddie Van Halen probably has the best technical skill, and he is a great guitarist... but being a musician is about bringing your unique imagination to life, and Jimi succeeded with that in an astounding way.
My favourite guitarist is Robert Fripp.

There is no best guitarist or definitely "ultimate pioneer" of guitar. Some will say Pat Metheny, others Hendrix, others demand it must be Van Halen and many will insist the only guitarist that ever contributed to music evolution was Wes Montgomery. (Which is pretty true when it comes to music theory- Most of what any guitarist does.. yes ANY guitarist does was done long ago in classical music). Plenty "know" the Andres Segovia must be the best. Of course Trey Anastasio or Jerry Garcia absolutely are the best guitarists.. I mean c'mon.. didn't you know that?? :) There's no possible way to have a right answer.

In my humble opinion it would be either Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani or David T. Chastain. Jimi Hendrix changed EVERYTHING! He invented new techniques that had never been thought of before. But to say he was the best guitarist of all time would be inaccurate in my opinion because most any good guitarist can play what he did now that they all know the techniques. Later Eddie Van Halen came along and did it again. So as many have already stated, it's all subjective and opinions.

All the names given here are excellent guitarists with the exception of Keith Moon. Jeff Beck is also an excellent guitarist and one name I see missing is Brian Setzer. I see Hendrix mentioned more than any other. With people claiming what he was doing was unheard of at the time. When did Jimi become popular? I know it wasn't before '67.
The correct answer is and always will be Frank Zappa who had been recording since what, '63 I think. I'm not sure exactly when FZ hit the recording studios but I do know it was well before JH became a solo artist. The guitar that Hendrix set on fire was given to Zappa whom then handed it down to Dweezil who himself is excellent, but alas, he is not Frank.

It's hard to say overall best, it's all about different senses of the argument. If you wanna talk about the classic opinions, some of my favorites would be Neil Young, Jerry Garcia and John Fogerty. If you wanna talk about the more underrated guitarists, J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr., the brothers from Meat Puppets and Ronald Jones from The Flaming Lips are all pretty great.

I have a difficult time picking the best guitarist. It is probably someone who no one knows because they had a real job and picked at home.
A drummer named John Noonan told me very young the best is to play on weekends and raise a family . Now some studio musicians are able to do this without sacrificing their art and historically shop owners would practice in between customers. Django Reinhardt was incredible and working with burned fingers Two on his fretting hand, I think. Guitar styles cover such a wide range of musical tastes so you cannot really say Hendrix would have done jazz well and so far there are few classically trained artists.
Best over all? It is like picking apple pie over blueberry.
We probably don't know her yet. I love some of the jazz players mentioned.
This is too much like rating the way your wife screws in lightbulbs.

Jimmy Page -Greatest writer of guitar riffs. Hendrix- innovator, not that great of a music writer. After Eddie Van Halen came there hasn't been much more you could do with a guitar. If Eddie Van Halen would have died at a young age he would be considered #1. Stevie Ray Vaughn was never even mentioned in the same breath until he died.

I couldn't come up with one name, just a list of who I thought were the greatest. That list would include, not in any particular order. Jimi Hendrix, Roy Clark, Robert Johnson, Steve Gaines, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Chet Atkins, Duane Allman, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Carlos Santana, and B B King.
Walter Becker never seems to get any mention, he's an amazing guitarist.

There is no "best", but Ed Van Halen is without a doubt one of the ultimate pioneers of modern guitar playing. To think that a 20 year old burst on to the scene , and just changed everything is amazing. Another great is Randy Rhoads. He wasn't around for long, but he made a big impact with just 2 albums. Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen and Yngwie Malmsteen are the 3 guitarists that made significant impacts on guitarists. To people who say Malmsteen has no soul in his playing are delusional. Listen to: Crying, Brothers, Marching Out, Icarus Dream Suite Opus 4, Save Our Love, You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget. You wont be able to tell me they have no feeling, because they do.

Hendrix is a overrated hack. If he had came around in the 1980s instead of the 1960s he would have never achieved fame. The only reason he made it big was because he was black and playing white mans rock-this made him stand out somewhat and also because he came out in the early days of heavy guitar rock.
Best guitarist? Joe Satriani hands down. Its amazing how few have heard of him. Eddie Van Who?

The question should really read "Who is your favorite guitarist of all time" since there is no best. But based on talent alone, if I had to pick someone it would be Roy Buchanan. If you've never heard him you're missing out on one of the most talented guitarist to ever grace this earth.

The great instrumentalists have always picked up on the lessons and understandings of past generations. To analyze Clapton, Page, Hendrix, Vaughn is to analyze the styling's of old black blues players, the jazz era (which blended the musical stylings of theory-trained white musicians and the improvisational skills and creativity of black musicians), and moonshine-folk [just to name a few]. None of the great musicians throughout history would have been able to do what they did without the stepping stones laid by the past generations of musicians. While all the guitarists in your list are people I admire, I can't proclaim them to be better than the musicians that undoubtedly influenced every single one them. There is lack of thoughtfulness in the people who responded by stating that the answer requires an opinion or that the topic is "subjective"; for surely we must give credit where credit is due, and that is to acknowledge the mastery of the generations that influenced these greats---musicians-of-influence who often died in poverty and obscurity.

This question has no one correct answer. "Best" is a very relative term that can vary tremendously depending on the style and tone that the listener prefers. With that being said, I will gladly list my favorites in no particular order:
Billy Gibbons
SRV
Gary Rossington
Charlie Starr
Jimmy Page
Brad Paisley
Angus Young
Eddie Van Halen
Slash
Clearly the "least famous" of this group would be Charlie Starr, singer and guitarist from a Georgia based group called Blackberry Smoke. If you have time, check them out. If you like southern rock, it doesn't get much better. Charlie is a fantastic guitarist, a good singer, and the band as a unit is very entertaining. I've seen 5 of the 9 guys on my list in person, and Charlie Starr is as good as any of them.

Greatness and becoming the best is achieved over time and being able to play many different types of music with equal motivation and talent. Clapton is by far the best, plays the best melodic, powerful solos, and knows when to stay in the background and be comfortable. He knows and understands how to fit into any genre of music presented to him. Oh, and he can sing with the best of them, and has.
Hendrix achieved a lot but had a very short career. He might be great, but not the best.
Of course my educated opinion is fact.

Totally subjective. There is zero denying the influence and impact that Hendrix, Clapton and Van Halen have had on popular guitar. There are also sooooooo many unsung greats who never get mentioned enough, guys like Alex Lifeson and Lindsey Buckingham to name just a couple. My personal favorites are the "Al's" - Al Dimeola, Alex Lifeson and Allan Holdsworth.

Hendrix is like the answer people feel obligated to put. He paved the way for a lot of guitarists, including myself, but I don't feel he's the best. Steve Vai really was a gamechanger in my opinion, he's a monster when it comes to playing, he knows his theory, and he paved the way for a lot of modern bands and a lot of my favorite bands, especially with popularizing the 7 string. Without the 7 string, my favorite band, Deftones, probably wouldn't sound like the way they do. Speaking of 7 strings, with Steve Vai's influence and popularization of the extended range guitar, one of the most technically skilled and greatest guitarists period, wouldn't be out without it, Tosin Abasi, he's a jazz and metal guitarist who makes amazing music and plays an 8 string guitar. He's tied with Steve with the whole greatest thing, they both can go across different genres, know their theory, are monsters with playing, are major influences nowadays, and are still pushing boundries on the guitar world. Sure you can name a bunch of older guitarists who are known for writing classic songs, but when it comes down to actual skill and knowledge of the instruement, I'm going with Steve Vai and Tosin Abasi. If you haven't heard of Tosin, check out the band Animals as Leaders.

I see you are rather young because you did not go back far enough.
Best blues guitarist B B King. Best pop guitarist Chet Atkins. All those you mentioned copied certain styles and riffs from the two I mentioned. BTW I wonder how many of the younger kids here are truly familiar with the work of Les Paul or Roy Clark. Here's a number by Clark that to this date no rock guitarist has ever been able to equal

One thing to note is that pop/country/rock/blues is fairly simple music. Most accomplished jazz and classical guitarists can outperform the more popular guitarists. Even a very average player can learn a few simple techniques that would make many audiences thinking he's an amazing player, when in reality he isn't.

Jesus, on all 10 albums he delivered technical performances that have never been repeated to date. The sheer diversity and brilliance of his melodies, that changed the lives of millions and influenced both the djent and deathcore genre's. The first album, Thou Shalt Not Kill suffered due to sound quality and poor production, but the second album was where you really could here the full tonality of what he was playing, and it was incredible. Each album progressed and the prodigy grew into a legend, who can forget the face melting solo on 'Rumours of Blasphemy?' Or the sheer brutality of the pounding dread that was '40 Days, 40 Nights and I Ain't Even Mad'.
So Jesus of Jesus and The Holy Crew gets my vote
