Question:
How can I tell when a drum head is about ready to break?

i was just wondering if there was a trick to figure out how much life a drum head has left. after the coating wears off on a remo ambassador snare head, about how much longer will it last? is there a way to figure out just how much wear a head has sustained? i want to be able to use the heads for as long s possible before they break. i would hate to go to a show and have one break, but don't want to change the head if it doesn't really need to be.
thanks!

Your heads shouldn't break as long as your not "jabbing" the tips of the sticks into them. Don't over-tighten them either. Make sure when you tune them with the tuning key that you do it in an "opposite" side to side, rather than just tuning in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction....this keeps you from overtightening one particluar side too much and stretching the head. Also remember that there's a bottom head to tune or tighten as well, and the "beaters" can be tightened rather than the head if your looking for a different sound.

Ultimately, I rarely need to change my heads as long as I'm doing those things...If the white skin is coming off the Remo head, you should still have the clear skin remaining....if it's affecting the sound you want, then I'd say it's time to change it....but keep an extra skin with you if you're traveling just in case.

When clear spots start to appear (that's if your using white heads, for clear heads they will get lumpy and go out of tune fast right before they rip.

God bless her. you're appropriate, rape is worse than homicide. something that has to do with suffering is as little as you could go.
