John Lennon worshipped Elvis.

I still think Elvis is the king of rock n roll. He is the one who opened the door for Rock N Roll to be accepted in the mainstream, if it wasn't for him there would be no Buddy Holly, Beatles, Chuck Berry, Rolling Stones, Doors....every band traces back to Elvis.

I think the Beatles should be the Kings of Rock n' roll. The Beatles were epic in the 60s and they are still epic now.

I frown upon Elvis for not writing his own music :[

Nope, I don't think so.

" If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it 'Chuck Berry' "

John Lennon said that.

For the record, "titles" like this are kind of meaningless. So no, I dont think John Lennon should be called the "king" of rock, any more than any other of the Beatles should be. The Beatles were who they were because of what all them contributed. Now, to respond to a couple of posters here:

Chuck Berry was a good rock and roll/rockabilly guitarist. He certainly was nowhere near the top of the class though. He was influential, but there were others in that era who were much better and much more influential.

Elvis was Elvis. The main thing Elvis had going for him was his management, and the fact that many of the great black artists of the time could not get the airplay on many radio stations.

Guys who were better, more influential and maybe not remembered as they should be:

Carl Perkins. Elvis idolized HIM. He wrote "Blue Suede Shoes" and is referred to as the King of Rockabilly. Since that was what all these guys were playing, I think Carl deserves some consideration. The Beatles, Stones and many others consider him a major influence.

Eddie Cochrane: Wrote "Summertime Blues" and is recognized by the Beatles and many others as a great influence on their early music.

Little Richard: The consummate early rock and roller. The Beatles covered many of his songs. "Long Tall Sally" for one. Chuck Berry was good. Little Richard was unbelievable.

Smokey Robinson: THE songwriter that pretty much spearheaded Motown. His group, The Miracles helped transition rockabilly into Motown soul. He's been writing songs for six decades. And most of them have been classics.

Buddy Holly: This guy is remembered in song, but his contribution to music can not be measured. He was the first to write, perform and record his own music. He pioneered multitrack recording and other technical advances. The songs he wrote launced many careers. "Not Fade Away" by the Stones. "When Will I Be Loved" by many artists. The list goes on. If you want to call somebody a king, he might qualify.

I'm not saying that I have the answer. Heck, there are so many possibilities. I just think some of the people who never get the credit should be recognized.

Chuck Berry- he was on the Charts first And he wrote his Own material While I have great respect for Buddy Holly he was a yr Behind both Chuck Berry and Elvis June 30, 1956 Berry's song "Roll Over Beethoven" takes the second spot on the R&B chart, and gets to No. 29 on the pop chart. September 1955 "Maybellene" hits No. 5 on Billboard's Rock and Roll Singles chart. May 21, 1955 Records first songs, "Maybellene" and "Wee Wee Hours."

to be honest, the beatles themselves should be called the king of rock -n- roll. john and paul as teenagers as the quarry men would skip school and sit across from each other with guitars in hand and write songs. they made a rule between them that if they could not remember what they played the next day, then it wasn't worth playing. so i believe without each other, john or paul would never have been. so at least john and paul should be the kings!

I don't want to say anything too negative about Elvis, but he just isn't my cup of tea. Charismatic performer, but kind of empty in actual meaning.

Lennon was the total package.

The Beatles are the most overrated band in history. They plain suck. And it is POP music, not rock music, the Beatles ruined the record industry by making it commercial. The Hansons and the Jonus Brothers are todays Beatles and I equate them with the Monkee's. PHUCK THE BEATLES!

Elvis was and still is the king of Rock and Roll. John Lennon Sucks and so do the Beatles. The worse band in the history of music period and anyone that likes them does not know a damn thing about music!
