Richard Wright was a pure genius, and by most accounts, a selfless, gentle human being. He was extremely talented and innovative; his keyboards and vocal contributions (both lead and harmony) were a cornerstone of Pink Floyd's signature sound, especially from 1967-1979. There are many songs from various eras that showcase his talents, but the two that really stand out are "Echoes" from the "Meddle" album (check the great vocal harmonies with Gilmour and the eerie single piano note intro) and "Great Gig in the Sky" from "Dark Side of the Moon (a Wright composition). Also worthy of mention are his unique contributions to the first three albums where he used an old Farfisa organ to astounding results ("A Saucerful of Secrets, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" and "More").

Charlie I'm embarrassed to say that I've never familiarized myself with the individual band members and each one's contributions. But I loved their music. Saw them in Charlotte in 1971.
When did he die? The past week has certainly been bizarre to say the least.
Great question.

He was very important to the band, his keyboard playing was essential to their music. he was also a great songwriter.
As a keyboardist, it would definitely be The Great Gig in the Sky.
As a member in general, listen to "Welcome to the Machine"
