I loved Marc Bolan and T Rex but I often wonder what Marc was taking when he wrote "One Inch Rock". I once tried to pass it off as a poem at school in the 70's. Here are the lyrics: Met a woman she's spouting prose She's got luggage eyes and a roman nose Her body is slung from side to side Need a lift she said much obliged I'm riding piggy-back Then I come to her shack We go inside the place is a mess She said my name's the liquid poetess She unties her mouth And her buckskin dress She drinks from a bottle labeled tenderness I'm in one hand in the other's a can She puts me in the can And smiles through the wall I got the horror's cos I'm one inch tall Next thing I know's a girl by my side Dressed in a bayleaf she's trying to hide I asked her name she said Germaine Do the rock do the one inch rock. Needless to say my teacher thought it was rubbish and thought I was too. But never mind Marc was a genius!

At the risk of a lot of laughter and thumbs down, one that stands out in my head because I heard it recently is Until I Find You Again by Richard Marx:

Lately I’ve been trying

To fill up my days since you’re gone

The speed of love is blinding

And I didn't know how to hold on

My mind won’t clear

I’m out of tears

My heart’s got no room left inside

Chorus:

How many dreams will end

How long can I pretend

How many times will love pass me by

Until I find you again

Will the arms of hope surround me

Will time be a fair weather friend

Should I call out to angels

Or just drink myself sober again

I can’t hide it’s true

I still burn for you

Your memory just won’t let me go

Chorus

I’d hold you tighter

Closer than ever before

No flame would burn brighter

If I could touch you once more.

Hold you once more

Chorus

Room without a window by Operation Ivy is a fantastic metaphor that accurately describes our society and how we 'deal' with conflict

The position being taken is not to be mistaken

For attempted education or righteous accusation

Only a description just an observation of the pitiful

Condition of our degeneration

Walls made of opinions thru which we speak and never listen

Ceiling made of pride vicious and self satisfied

Door thats made of rage hard and slowly aged

Always closing tighter with every war that's waged

Room without a window can't see out...

Floor is made of lives wed gladly end to stay inside

Corners made of borders, borders made of law and order

Painted with the words of politicians and religion

Plastered with the wreckage of our cultural division

Room without a window cant see out...

The Mountain Goats have a lot of cleaver lyrics.

"But I do wake you up, and when I do,

You blaze down the hall and you scream.

I'm in my room with the headphones on,

Deep in the dream chamber.

And then I'm awake and I'm guarding my face,

Hoping you don't break my stereo,

Because it's the one thing that I couldn't live without.

And so I think about that,

And then I sort of black out.

Held under these smothering waves,

By your strong and thick-veined hand,

But one of these days,

I'm gonna wriggle up on dry land." Hast Thou Considered the Tetrapod?

Long but there's no way to shorten it.

I'm a-goin' back out 'fore the rain starts a-fallin',

I'll walk to the depths of the deepest black forest,

Where the people are many and their hands are all empty,

Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters,

Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison,

Where the executioner's face is always well hidden,

Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten,

Where black is the color, where none is the number,

And I'll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it,

And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it,

Then I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin',

But I'll know my song well before I start singin',

a hard rains gonna fall is a lyrical masterpiece. i like it beause it's full of metaphors.

I've come to know the cold

I think of it as home

When there ain't enough of me to go around

I'd rather be left alone

If I call you outta habit

I'm outta love and I gotta have it

Would you give it to me if I fit your needs

Like we both knew we had it?

Now the damage is done

and we're back out on the run

It's funny how everything was roses when we held one to the guns

Just because you're winning don't mean you're the lucky ones

I really like the way he did this verse, it always stood out to me.

And God help you if you are an ugly girl

Course too pretty is also your doom

Because everyone harbors a secret hatred

For the prettiest girl in the room

And God help you if you are a phoenix

And you dare to rise up from the ash

A thousand eyes will smolder with jealousy

While you are just flying past

There is no pain you are receding

A distant ship smoke on the horizon

You are only coming through in waves

Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying

When I was a child

I caught a fleeting glimpse

Out of the corner of my eye

I turned to look but it was gone

I cannot put my finger on it now

The child is grown

The dream is gone

And I have become comfortably numb

"anywhere on this road"

I live in this country now

I'm called by this name

I speak this language

It's not quite the same

For no other reason

Than this it's my home

And the places I used to be far from are gone

You've travelled this long

You just have to go on

Don't even look back to see

How far you've come

Though your body is bending

Under the load

There is nowhere to stop

Anywhere on this road

My heart is breaking

I cannot sleep

I love a man

Who's afraid of me

He believes if he doesn't

Stand guard with a knife

I'll make him my slave

For the rest of his life

I love this hour

When the tide is just turning

There will be an end

To the longing and yearning

If I can stand up

To angels and men

I'll never get swallowed

In darkness again

You've travelled this long

You just have to go on

Don't even look back to see

How far you've come

Though your body is bending

Under the load

There is nowhere to stop

Anywhere on this road

"School's Out" by Alice Cooper.

Don't believe me?

"We've got no class,

and we've got no principles..."

You could also think of "principles" as "principals", like the school-related ones. It's a very clever play on homophones.

Another funny/clever one is "Debra" by Beck.

"I wanna get wit' you,

only you...

and your sister

I think her name's Debra."

It's great because the lyrics, and the music in general, is a parody of the beegees-style love songs that use things like "get with you" as a less explicit way to say "sex".

And of course, there's the king of all clever lyrics, the Assumption Song by The Arrogant Worms. It makes you think that each verse is going to use a dirty word to rhyme with the last, but it never does until the end.

"There was an old farmer who lived on a rock

He sat in the meadow just shaking his

Fist at some boys who were down by the crick

Their feet in the water, their hands on their

Marbles and play things at a half past four

There came a young lady who looked like a

Pretty, young creature, she sat on the grass,

She pulled up her dress and she showed them her

Ruffles, and laces and white fluffy duck

She said she was learning a new way to

Bring up her children, so they would not spit

While the boys in the barnyard were shoveling

Refuse, and litter from yesterday's hunt

While the girl in the meadow was rubbing her

Eyes at the fellow, down by the dock

He looked like a man with a sizable

Home in the country, with a big fence out front

If he asked her politely, she'd show him her

Little pet dog, who was subject to fits

And maybe she'd let him grab hold of her

Small, tender hands with a movement so quick

And then she'd bend over and suck on his

Candy, so tasty made of butterscotch

And then he'd spread whip cream all over her

Cookies that she had left out on her shelf

If you think this is dirty, you can go f*ck yourself!"

No one else has got your eyes to see the things you see

It's up to you to change your life and my life's up to me

The problems that you suffer from are problems that you make

The **** we have to climb through is the **** we choose to take

If you don't like the life you live, change it now it's yours

Nothing has effects if you don't recognize the cause

Laundry Girl - Ludo

"You loaned me coins to dry my socks, I walked you home at 6:00

Your flip-flops flip-flopped, we made fun of Charlie Sheen

You said the Kids in the Hall was the best show of them all

I told you how wrong you were

You whirled around to make your case, to put me right back in my place

You held your laundry in your arms, it said I-mean-it on your face

And in my last clean shirt, I was completely off-guard

When Laundry Girl, you kissed me hard"

That's just a part of it, but the whole song is just so clever. I love how Ludo makes the perfect love song out of similes about laundry. I encourage everyone to hear the whole song. It's awesome.

Speak To Me/Breath, Pink Floyd

Breathe, breathe in the air.

Don't be afraid to care.

Leave, don't leave me.

Look around and choose your own ground.

Long you live and high you fly

smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry

all you touch and all you see

Is all your life will ever be.

it's so meaningful to me. The song, IMO, its stating the inevitable with lyrics like "smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry" My favorite verse throughout the whole song is def. the first. "Breathe, breathe in the air. /Don't be afraid to care." Hard to beat!

She's been a bad girl.

She's like a chemical.

Though you try to stop it,

she's like a narcotic.

You wanna torture her.

You wanna talk to her.

putting up your temperature.
