Question:
Classic Rock elitists: Are you 100% positive that Classic Rock is the only Rock?

(The original question asked by my friend Josh: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AufoAG4wggNBygGioMmM9Vrsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20091123180825AAKL0T9)

Now, I'm not going to start pointing fingers at people, let me first say. I am an indie-kid. I would pick indie over any genre any day of the week, but i wasn't always an indie-kid to begin with, I was into Hip-hop, then classic rock, electronica and now Indie. MY TASTES DIDN'T "EVOLVE", THEY "EXPANDED"

No matter what place in the world, what forum I go to. There is always somebody bashing modern music, not even giving it a chance. While it is true, they don't make music like they used to, we cannot all dwell in the past forever. I am a strong participant in my city's music scene anyway I can. Joining bands and such. I cannot tell you how many time I have been asked, "Can you sing like Robert Plant?" or "Can you write songs like Paul McCartney?".

NO. newer musicians cannot be like Paul McCartney or Robert Plant or Mick Jagger. Their time is up (even thought their achievements cannot be ignored or forgotten)

"So I'll give you all a chance you get a glimpse of the good modern music from great genres:"

What I don't understand is, why any of it matters?

Who cares if we don't like modern music? People that listen to modern music are constantly complaining about having to defend why they like it, and constantly use the "everyone has their own taste" excuse. Well so do we. We don't have to like new music, and it isn't our duty even have to try to like it.

You said it best when you said there won't be another McCartney, Plant, Jagger, or even Mercury, Townshend and Bowie. Basically, what I get out of that is, there wont' be artists on that level anymore, so I should just accept the mediocrity that is modern musicians and fork out money to fund their unnecessarily expensive albums. I'd rather not.

What drew me to classic rock, and what I love about it is the simplicity of it. I love the era of clean vocalists like Freddie Mercury, Roger Daltry, David Gilmour, and to a lesser extent Bob Seger, Brad Delp and Phil Lynott. I love the perfectly executed guitar solos that weren't overdone and aren't too long. I can thank guys like Brian May, Eric Clapton, Neal Schon, and again, David Gilmour for those. The time when a band spent a very long time in the studio to make perfection, instead of rushing albums out to the public to make money faster.

You can argue all day about originality, and I am on the side of modern bands lack it severely. It isn't all their fault, but there hasn't been anything done in the modern era that you can't trace back directly to a classic rock artist, so excuse me if I'd rather listen to it the way it was done in the first place. I'll stick with my classic rock, I feel no obligation to expand in any way.

***When did I ever say you were talking about mainstream Stuie? Oh, and get the hell over yourself. "We are the few that took the time to delve deeper" Seriously? If ANY modern music impressed me, I'd listen to it, and I have listened to it. Who cares that you listen to newer music, quit making it out like you are some saint for the music industry, they don't even know you exist apart from the 6 dollars they get from you.

To be honest, I hate A Skylit Drive and As Blood Runs Black. However, We Came as Romans are pretty decent. There are some key bands you forgot there, but that's unimportant. Regardless, while oftentimes I find older music is better than some of the newer stuff, that doesn't always apply. Some of my favorite bands are from more recent times. My second favorite band formed in '93 (Floater, from Oregon) and my favorite folk metal band (Tuatha de Danann, Celtic folk from Brazil) formed in 1995. So I agree with you. Although Elitists of any genre are f*cking twatbag morons, the Classic Rock Elitists are some of the most annoying.

Honestly, I agree with the "Their time is up" part. Yes, they were great musicians. But if musicians today try to be The Beatles, or Led Zeppelin, it's boring. It's been done. Music has to move forward. Sure, you can say that "modern mainstream music is bad", but just take a look back. In the 90's what did it look like? We had a flood of Backstreet Boys and *NSYNCs. In the 80's, I can hardly think of a single band that didn't sound 'cheesy' (Metalheads, too. We can't hide either. No matter how much you might like thrash, you have to admit, it was pretty cheesy). There has always been crappy music. Musicians are not worse now, they don't have less 'soul', they know how to play their instruments, and old music was just as much about image as most of today's music. I guarantee you, there are many musicians now with more technical skill, more song-writing skill, and more emotional power than all of those people who everyone worships from back in the day. If you still like older music, I have no problem with that, I'm not saying that old music is bad, I'm just saying that music has changed, as it had to. Do you really want to just listen to a bunch of Beatles rip-off bands? Would that be any better?

I've given bits and pieces of this answer before to a different question, but I feel that what was said then applies here. I would like to think that all of us, as music lovers, could embrace the growth and evolution of the medium, but I've learned gradually that it isn't the case. Some like to keep in their station, and while I think it's kind of sad that they that don't want to broaden their horizons, since it doesn't affect my day-to-day life I can't be bothered with it. If it makes you happy, more power to you.

It's the semantics with that statement that's a part of the problem, though. Is Classic Rock truly the ONLY Rock? Hell no, there is tons out there that was recorded after the 70s and appeals just as much, if not more, to a wide body of listeners. Are you somehow uneducated as a listener because you enjoy the music created by musicians that have not been put on the same level as "the masters" and, in some circles, are deemed inferior? Again, no, especially since such judgements one way or the other are completely subjective.

My advice is to read through and ignore the arrogance of the statement itself, and just get out there and keep listening to what you love...no matter when it was recorded.

I prefer classic rock over modern rock but I still do like it. It's just it shouldn't be so hard to find a good band. Even about 20 years ago and before that, mainstream music was good. Now you're lucky if you find some good bands. That's just my opinion though.

EDIT: Oh but the way, I do really like The White Stripes and Yeah Yeah Yeahs and TV on the Radio are great too. It's just today's mainstream really sucks.
2009-12-02 13:28:16 UTC
I agree with From Mars to Sirius. It's because people are unwilling to dig, thinking all music today will be the same generic sh*t that you hear on the radio daily.

I, myself, am an alternative rock kinda guy. It may not be some of the ol' classic rock, but b'y, I tells ya, it's still some good ****.

*EDIT*

I'm not sure WHY A Kind of Magic has a chick as his display picture, but I assure you, he is a dude.

Ha, I feel like I've been patted on the head and given a cookie... WHY ARE YOU WRITING IN CAPITALS AT ME? Seriously, kinda patronising there.

If people don't like that kind of music, I don't understand why other people feel this incredible urge to force it down their throats. It's a personal preference.

I like some modern music, and I can think of a hundred reasons why I consider it an inadequate comparison to the older stuff, but I wouldn't go around shouting that everyone MUST like it or else face the wrath of the music labeler's and their "Modern Music Elitist" title that they would invariably rubber stamp you with.

Oh, and the guy that asked the original question did it in a kind of wankery way, that's why he pissed a few people off.

right now i am giving total PROPS to A Kind Of Magic. *starts slow clap*

and wtf with the thumbs down. can't we atleast be a bit tolerant and mature about this?

Michelle has to translate a story in Latin, so we'll make this pretty short:

Yeah, I listen to some modern music. I enjoy Foo Fighters, White Stripes, Franz Ferdinand, TCV, etc (if those are even considered "modern" -- really just post '95)

But there is really no comparison when it comes to classic rock. The genre is epic, but the genre is dead and without a doubt has *no* chance of a resurrection.

There's no reason to be angry or upset, you have your views and others have their views. Who says that they're being "elite" or closed minded. Sure, some people can be that way but definitely not ALL. How would you feel if I said "how come ALL people who like modern rock think theyre so elite and try to shove music down our throat??" not very cool. at all.

At some point, you just have to realize humanity as a whole is stubborn, and ignorant because of it. And failure to accept the truth about modern music is dissapointing.

The Flaming Lips are amazing, i like lots of rock and classic rock but i just hate today's mainstream rock. i like some of the indie but not all. i cant stand the Yeah Yeah Yeahs or White Stripes but those other bands you had were cool

edit: i completely agree with A Kind of Magic's answer

edit: Stuie can you honestly say that those bands you listed are better than Zeppelin, Bowie, Floyd, and Hendrix?

I have to agree 100%. Here are some more bands and artists that prove the point.

Edit: I think A Kind of Magic missed the point, because all of the bands you and I listed aren't anything close to what she described. We are the select few that took time to delve deeper and find good music. It just shows her ignorance that whenever we talk about modern bands its always some mainstream sh*t.

A Kind of Magic: I was just reading between the lines like you did. "fork out money to fund their unnecessarily expensive albums," and "rushing albums out to the public to make money faster", Sounds like you're describing mainstream sh*t to me.
