41. Pearl Jam – Ten - 1991

favourites of those:

galaxie 500 (which is light years better than the xx)

I hate to say it but the readers of Q magazine are complete donkeys. The Killers at number 17, while The Flaming Lips, Spiritualized, Lou Reed and Public Enemy are not even in the top 100!!

Tender Prey - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

Nothing's Shocking - Jane's Addiction

3 Feet High And Rising - De La Soul

New York - Lou Reed

The Soft Bulletin - The Flaming Lips (Should have been waaaay higher in the rankings)

Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space - Spiritualized

Hot Fuss - The Killers

The Man Who - Travis

White Ladder - David Grey

Day And Age - The Killers

No Angel - Dido

Impressions of this list:

1. I see the "best" albums were also very mainstream mega-sellers. Oasis twice?? U2 twice?? Radiohead twice?? That suggests to me that the readers of Q magazine aren't especially deep listeners, rendering everything else on the list suspect.

2. Magazine readers not being musicologists, the albums are also severely weighted towards the most recent. Although two albums from 1987 made it, there is very little from the mini-renaissance of good albums that came out from '88-'92

3. As a British magazine, this list is hugely Anglocentric. Oasis wouldn never have made the top 10 in America, let alone twice. I doubt Radiohead would be up there twice too...

So, it offers nothing useful really, but it does provide a glimpse into what mainstream, social climbing Brits like...

208. Alice In Chains – Dirt – 1992

67. Metallica – Metallica – 1991

27. Guns N’ Roses – Appetite For Destruction – 1987

90. Def Leopard – Hysteria – 1987

2. Nirvana – Nevermind – 1991

59. Smashing Pumpkins – Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness – 1995

56. Nirvana – In Utero – 1993

102. Nine Inch Nails – The Downward Spiral – 1994

112. The Smashing Pumpkins – Siamise Dream – 1993

96. Prodigy – Fat Of The Land – 1997

140. Linkin Park – Hybrid Theory - 1994

247. Slipknot – Slipknot – 1999

Ummm, and where are Type O Negative, Soundgarden, Megadeth, Godsmack & Korn on this list??? Q Magazine obviously does not know how to put together a list consisting of the top 250 albums. I noticed that the majority of this list was just "spacefillers" in my opinion, and whoever compiled this list took a few awesome albums and dumped a whole mess of garbage into it. Where is Pink Floyd - The Wall, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Rush, or ZZ Top??? You can pretty much tell that there was NO effort put into this list.

Good evening Punch :)

We have to skip the first 26 to find an album I own!

[#27 = "Appetite For Destruction" by GN'R]

In fact, for albums I own / have owned, the next is #58.

After that it's: #93, #165 {embarrasing!}, #191{of course}, and #217.

I do have two songs from #36, but they were individual downloads. Actually, there are 5 or 6 on that list where I may own a song or two, but never the album...

BQ: Okay, given that the magazine only started in 1986, I can understand why it has so much from the last 15 years on there. But those years were my teens and 20s, and a lot of that music is just... well... so-so...

Where was Tori Amos, or Type O Negative...?!

There's like 5 bands on this list. Take away Oasis, Radiohead, Blur, Coldplay, and Gorillaz and you're left with about 10 albums. Also, given this list, one would think that Kings Of Leon are the greatest American rock band of the last decade. Most lists suck and seem to be designed just to annoy people but this one in particular is very unimaginative and sucky.

Here's one I liked: Sign O The Times - Prince

Clunkers: A lot.

"Reader-based" lists remind me of why critics are around. Good ones:

Automatic For The People - R.E.M.

Loveless - My Bloody Valentine

Post - Bjork

BQ: Radiohead, Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, Strokes... and a few others should ideally not even be there. But it's just a reader poll, the average reader has no taste or perspective. I didn't even see any Beatles, Q readers must be every modern Britpop fan and a few other philistines.
