No, I disagree. I think that maybe they are slightly overrated, but definitely not "highly" overrated. I think that bands like Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Screaming Trees, Temple of the Dog, and Mudhoney (Pearl Jam not included...they aren't great) are great and they may have more technical skill in some areas than Nirvana, but they don't have the emotional impact that Nirvana had. They also don't have the impact on music that Nirvana had. When Nirvana came out, they ushered in a whole new revolution of music. By no means did they invent grunge, but they certainly brought it to the mainstream and defined the sound for the 90s and gave a voice to the generation of teens in the early 90s. So they did have a very important role in grunge music, so I don't think that they are overrated just because people acknowledge this impact.

When I was in high school (early 1990's), I liked Nirvana the best, but now I would actually rank Soundgarden or Alice in Chains higher. By the way, I had a chance to see Allice in Chains in concert last year and they were phenomenal!

Umm nope Nirvana started in 1987 and gave rise to grunge which inspired bands like Pearl Jam (1990), Mudhoney (1988) and TotD (1990). Grunge became commercially successful in the first half of the 1990s, due mainly to the release of Nirvana's Nevermind. It's like asking if the Sex Pistols were over rated? Even if they did or did not start punk the defined it.

Nirvana defined grunge so in essence without Nirvana Grunge would have been something totally different.

Yes. While they certainly changed the direction that music was taking, aside from the drumming, there were certainly no musicians that absolutely stand out. The guitar playing and vocals were okay, bass, well, it was there. Everyone points to Nirvana as being the end of the "hair band" era. They may have put the final nail in it, but GnR started closing the door on it before Nirvana hit it big.

Negative. Nirvana wasn't the best technically as the rest of those bands. They were as primed and polished as those bands. But what they lacked in actual skill, they made up for in their song-writing and their emotion. Kurt Cobain was the truest form of an artist that languished signing to a large record label. He didn't want to be famous, but cherished the thought of his words reaching millions.

Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Pearl Jam are some of my favorites of the grunge era, but to completely dismiss Nirvana's contributions as "highly overrated" is pure submission of expressionism. Nirvana tried to stay true to their punk roots as much as they could without having the man tell them they needed more love ballads. Without them, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Pearl Jam would not have the voice they have today.

You should be thanking Nirvana.

No, I think Nirvana & Pearl Jam led the way for all of the other grunge bands. Sound Garden sucks. Alice & Chains and STP sound too much alike.

Kirk Cobain actually wanted to be a punk rocker, and was disappointed that he was shunned by the punk community and labelled as "grunge".

This is about the billionth time I've seen this question.

Are they overrated? Yes.

But they revolutionized music and broke free of one genre to create an entire musical movement. They, like The Beatles, deserve to be overrated.

EDIT: To assume that he hates Cobain just because he thinks they're overrated is the same as assuming that, if I don't vote for Obama, I hate black people.

I think Lynyrd Skynyrd is highly overrated, but I certainly don't dislike them. And believe me, Nirvana is -not- underrated, though I think their lyrics sometimes are.

if it were not for mudhoney, kurt would have offed himself before you ever heard of him. Check your history, read some books. dates on lps don't mean a band came before another. green river and mudhoney were the fathers of all the more popular grunge acts. nirvana got lucky, just like kimbo slice, the machine ground them up and spit them out, except for groll he played those fools and all radio listening sheep and now he is rich!!
