Animal Collective are a really great, unique band who definitely deserve more exposure.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhHQukKXxCw

Then there's The Go! Team, one of my favourtie indie bands.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0eso4ARXzk

And now defunct Irish band The Immediate.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLIimm7hJM8

And last but not least, The Frames, who've been doing the rounds for the last decade or so, but still haven't gained the widespread recognition they rightfully deserve.

Aslo, Wolf Parade, Final Fantasy, DRN, and RedNeck Manifesto;

Of course, I have to go with Gogol Bordello on this one:

http://free.napster.com/view/artist/index.html?id=11583719

I recommend the songs: Wonderlust King, Tribal Connection, Dogs Were Barking, and Undestructable

If you like them (or the Gypsy Punk style in general), then you could follow it up with Kultur Shock:

These aren't new but two bands that i think deserved more recognition back in the 90's are Warrior Soul and The Almighty. Here's a couple of songs from each:

Warrior Soul:

I don't know how deep you want to go, but Stephen Malkmus, Wilco and Yo La Tengo instantly come to mind. I am a gigantic Stephen Malkmus shill though. Okkervil River and Apollo Sunshine are really awesome groups that don't get very much recognition, even less for Apollo Sunshine. It's funny I had heard them and thought they were a "hip pitchfork-y band" and was very suprised to find out that nobody really knew about them. I guess my friend just saw them open for someone or something like that. I'm sure that you can find any of these groups on youtube and myspace.

If you want to hear a good local band I would look into Franklin For Short. They're very good. I'm a pretty big shill for them though. I've seen them a bunch of times, the drummer is a buddy of mine, and they're really talented, but no one knows who they are...yet?

I love BC's answer. Jack Off Jill and London After Midnight are very good.

Wolfmother is a good rock band. They're not heavy or light, just rock. They're pretty popular, but I think that they definitely deserve more attention than what they get.

Oh, I got lots of those.

Ours - Good band, definitely deserve more recognition. They kind of have a Muse/Radiohead sound going on. The singer Jimmy Gnecco also does some solo work, which is also good.

http://myspace.com/oursmusic

http://www.myspace.com/jimmygneccosolo

Local H - This band has a huge underground fan base and they're still putting out good music (at least I think it's good) so I'm not sure why they aren't more popular. Their myspace page isn't working for me right now (maybe it'll work for you), so I included two youtube videos.

http://myspace.com/localh

http://youtube.com/watch?v=OdCqzEdG2DQ

http://youtube.com/watch?v=3eT69nguAWk

(cover of Britney's "Toxic")

Jack Off Jill - They should of gotten more attention during their career, excellent band that was basically overlooked. Of course, there's Jessicka's new project Scarling., but Scarling. just doesn't quite compare to JOJ.

http://myspace.com/jackoffjill

http://myspace.com/scarling

Retrograde - A Canadian band that I stumbled across a few years ago, I was very impressed with what I heard. From what I understand, they're fairly popular in Canada... but have yet to break through in other Countries.

http://myspace.com/retrogradeband

Apoptygma Berzerk - One of my all time favorite bands, though I'm not crazy about their last couple albums... their earlier work is much better.

http://myspace.com/apoptygmaberzerk

Flesh Field - Excellent industrial band, not very well known though.

http://myspace.com/fleshfield

and of course... London After Midnight. I think you already know how much I love this band, Sean Brennan is really great at what he does and this band should definitely get more attention.

http://myspace.com/lam

hehe, people that read my answers on a regular basis are probably wishing that I'd shut up about these bands, but they're among my favorites and I feel the need to get their names out there. :)

Edit:

Thought of another.. Snake River Conspiracy - Awesome band, though they haven't released an album since Sonic Jihad (2000) and Tobey (the singer) is in and out of the band. I'm not sure if she's currently in or out, but she does have a solo career going on as well. With or without Tobey I hope they release something soon.

Hi Cinnamon.....Listen to Protest the hero. buy the album (they don't have it online). Kezia is the name of the album. The song Turn soonest to the sea is like an AMAZING song. It's really good rock, and I wouldn't give you bad judgement, so just go buy it, love it, and pick me as best answer lol!

Amplifier are a great band from Manchester. I don't normally like bands from Manchester, but they don't sound like the Manchester sound (whatever that is). Their EP 'The Astronaut Dismantles HAL' is fabulous.

Monty Are I has a very unique sound... even the iTunes review said they had a unique sound (I have found that any iTunes review rips the band apart... except this one). They only have one Cd, but everything on it is great.
