Question:
Rock & Pop: What are your thoughts on Led Zeppelin?
?

What do you guys at Rock & Pop think about Led Zeppelin? Personally, I'll probably get a lot of hate for this, but I feel that Led Zeppelin is one of THE most overrated bands of all time. Led Zeppelin isn't bad, and they were very talented; they also had a massive influence on rock music. However, I like Led Zeppelin a lot less nowadays; their songs just don't have a lot of substance in my opinion, and their lyrics aren't that great. Plus, Robert Plant's vocals honestly annoy me at times, and the praise that Led Zeppelin gets is ridiculous, at times. I feel that Led Zeppelin just seems to lack that special "something" that I find in bands such as Sonic Youth, Dead Kennedys, Echo & the Bunnymen and Joy Division. In conclusion, Led Zeppelin is a good band, but I'll take The Who & The Rolling Stones over Led Zeppelin any day of the week. I also prefer bands such as The Velvet Underground, The Cure, R.E.M., Husker Du, The Kinks, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, etc. to Led Zeppelin.

BQ: Favorite Led Zeppelin songs?
BQ2: What are your thoughts on Robert Plant, as a vocalist?
BQ3: What are your thoughts on Jimmy Page, as a guitarist? Would you say that the praise that he gets for his guitar work is overblown, or deserved?
BQ4: How would you react if someone (particularly a teenager) said this to you in real life: "OMG gaiz, liek Nirvana izzz one of the worst, most overrated bandz of all time, yo!! Jimi Hendrix sux, and The Beatles r boring & stupiddd!! Lil Wayne & Kanye West 4eva!!".

Im not going dish out any hate. Its your opinion. I think perhaps they are a bit overrated, but it seems to me any band that is commercially successful on a massive scale seems to get the overrated tag. Even though at the time they were probably doing something revolutionary, but as time goes on it seems tame or bland or something.

I like Led Zeppelin and musically they are great band, Plants lyrics arent as meaningful as Bob Dylans for example but for what it is it works well. In my opinion they are/were a great band. I know what you mean by saying they lack a certain "something" like Joy Division etc but those bands came after Led Zeppelin trying to shake up the music at that time. My point is, is that to some people at that time Led Zeppelin probably had the same meaningfulness as Sonic Youth etc. Since Led Zeppelin gave people a template to build on and create new musical sounds much like the Beatles did in their day.

I respect your opinion. But for me Led Zeppelin are one of the greats.

BQ: The Rover, Bron Y Aur Stomp, Custard Pie, Kashmir, Boogie With Stu, Heartbreaker, Friends. To name a few.

BQ2: Hes a good singer and his more recent works are quite brilliant hes not as high pitched as he used to be. His new album is quite brilliant. On a separate note Robert Plant and Axl Rose I think are similar sort of vocalists.

BQ3: Jimmy Page is a good guitarist. Not the best of all time or anything but out trumps a lot of people in my opinion. When you listen to Led Zeppelin you can hear different styles in the music at times it not just blues rock. He does the folk and the eastern tones of Kashmir etc. He tried to push himself a bit if that makes sense he didnt use the same old riff for every song he used different tunings etc. He did try to be different. Thats why I thinks hes good. Not like some guitar players who do the same style all the time. I would say its deserved.

BQ4: I wouldnt care. They are entitled to their own opinion. I would probably smile and say thats your opinion.

I think it's ok to dislike them, however I really do like them. I don't think they're overrated, or at least not as overrated as a few other bands I consider overrated, like Pink Floyd and Rush (que the thumb downs). I really like the first 4 Led Zeppelin albums (self titles) but not a major fan of everything else.

BQ: Whole Lotta Love, Communication Breakdown, Good Times Bad Times, Dazed and Confused, Immigrant Song, Black Dog, When the Levee Breaks, Ramble On, Your Time is Gonna Come

BQ2: I actually really like his vocals. It took a while for me to really appreciate it, but I really do now.

BQ3: again, I think he deserves all the praise he gets. I love his guitar playing. But that's me. Maybe not the most talented, but still great.

BQ4: "Kill yourself" (I respect all opinions, just not ridiculously ignorant and degrading ones like that.)

Led Zeppelin is a great band but they are a little overrated. Not hating cause I ******* love them. I love Robert Plants voice though he can over do it sometime when singing live. Jimmy page is a great guitarist but i would not say he is the best. I actually ran into Robert Plant at a airport in Texas. Well I think it was him he looked EXACTLY like him and he has a house in Dallas Texas. I didn't have the guts to ask if it was really him cause I heard he can be a jerk to fans. I like to think it was him though and literally ran right into him! Anyway great band but i've heard better.

Everyone knocks Zep for plagiarism, and they don't even realize that their favorite bands are probably even less original. They were all individualists. You could hear the drum track to a Zep song and know immediately which one it was. That is INCREDIBLY rare for a drummer. The bassist, John Paul Jones, is an extremely capable multi-instrumentalist and composer. Jimmy Page is a great producer and brought tons of new guitar phrasing to the map. Plant could be overbearing at times with the orgasming, but he was iconic nonetheless. While they're not my favorite band by a longshot, I have nothing but deep appreciation for the level of influence they've had.

Now they may not be your taste but I use overrated for band that don't have talent or singers it the same..

BQ Moby Dick, growing up as young kid John Bonham was one of my fav drummers...

BQ.. I just live with it, i think Lou Reed was better.

BQ.. Jimmy Page, was No Jimmy but not many people were.. Jimmy Page was great for what he did..

BQ.. I wouldn't , I would say check some real Rappers from back in the day... Lil wayne is artist and not even a musician... Kanye west sounds like he went back to 2 grade and is stealing little kid raps from the school yard.. they got 7 to 11 year kids that rap better then both of them... Kanye just let money and fame get to his head..

They are overrated for sure. They came in with a bang with I and II, III was okay, IV was legendary... and then a slow painful progression to experimental suckage until that one guy died.

I think that a lot of it came from the dad rockers who brainwashed us into believing they were the best thing ever. I remember discovering LZ as a teen in the 90s and thinking... yeah, there's nothing we have that can touch these guys (except for the dumb songs like D'yer Maker, Fool in the Rain, Hot Dog, and Carouselambra).

But looking back--especially after hearing Stairway so over played on the fogey rock stations for the last three decades--compared to the legends of the 90s like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, STP, Alice in Chains, Korn, and Nine Inch Nails... ...they aren't all that great. I'm sure I'll think the same thing in ten years when I start comparing them to bands that will be 20 years old like the Killers, The White Stripes, Franz Ferdinand, Audioslave, and Queens of the Stone Age.

I loved them as a teenager but pretty much grew out of them, I still listen to them now and again for nostalgia reasons but don't rate them very highly artistically, never understood why they are always placed on such a pedestal. In the 70's I preferred Queen and Bowie and 30+ years later I still do. The whole plagiarism thing sticks in my throat too much, can't really take them seriously.

BQ: Sick Again, Bring It On Home, Gallows Pole, In My Time Of Dying, How Many More Times

BQ2: He is pretty good on the early albums but was always a poor mans Steve Marriott to me.

BQ3: He's a fine guitarist, especially acoustic but he wouldn't make my Top 20.

BQ4: I would slap them and not a court in the land could prove I did anything wrong.

Greatest Cover Band EVER! And screw you guys no other band does covers like they do.

BQ:

Babe I'm Gonna Leave You(Anne Bredon),

Ten Years Gone,

Kashmir,

In My Time Of Dying(Traditional),

Dazed and Confused(Jake Holmes),

Since I've Been Lovin' You(Moby Grape's "Never"),

How Many More Times(Albert King)

BQ2: He's pretty much a scarecrow on a bad day

BQ3: Great live but is as great a composer as Elvis, oh yeah I went there.

BQ4: I'd give them a high five and shake their hand and I'll make sure to equip a very high voltage joy buzzer at that too.

They are amazing; and no, I don't hate you for saying they are overrated. I can understand why they would be considered overrated, and I would agree with you on that, but they are too amazing for me to say that.

BQ: Dazed and Confused (Cover), D'yer Mak'er, The Lemon Song, Whole Lotta Love, Communication Breakdown, Black dog, Stairway to Heaven, Good Times, bad Times and Kashmir.

BQ2: He's freakin' awesome!

BQ3: He's freakin' awesome too; and deserves all the praise he gets!

BQ4: I would agree with them about Nirvana, but defend Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles. I would tell that Lil' Wayne and Kanye West are for dumb minded little kids.

In my opinion the main reason Zepp is so popular is because of their heavy amount of influence they had on rock music. They, along with Sabbath, helped create (and popularize) hard rock and heavy metal. And the members were all wholly competent at what they did.

BQ1: Kashmir, Whole Lotta Love, When the Levee Breaks

BQ2:I think that plant was a decent vocalist on his own rights, but he brought in a new and very influential style that changed rock music/

BQ3: Page was a sloppy player, but he played with more speed and heaviness than most of his contemporaries, giving him a very unique sound.

BQ4: I've lived that situation before, usually ends in me *attempting* to get their mind changed, usually ending in them not listening to me, or telling me that rock and metal "all sounds the same" or that it is "screamo crap". Then I cut off communication with that person.

I think Jimmy Page had a distinct voice, one that can be recognized and remembered, And thats what made Led Zep so famous. When it comes to his guitar work, I think he really tried to capture is energy in the way he was playing. He put his full emotion into it. I'd say he deserves the praise, just like Slash, Jimi, or Santana. my favorite song is Going to California. I love the softness, and then when he screams you hear how hes giving it his all, no f*cks given

I've been listening to nothing but jazz lately but Led Zeppelin is still one of my favorite bands... Once it clicks, it clicks... yeah they might be a tad overrated sometimes but other times I find them underrated... Like I said, one day it will click and you will like Zeppelin. I am aware of all the bands you listed as I listen to them too but I like Zep also... Zep is acquired taste for some people... Maybe give their earlier albums more of a listen because a lot of it is just heavier psychedelic blues and folk.

I could not agree with you more. You won't get any hate from me and I grew up loving them. They were my second favourite band when I was in high school in the seventies, but they have lost all credibility with me. The amount of plagiarism they used to get famous in the first place is staggering and includes Stairway To Heaven. They are over-worshipped and no one seems phased by the amount of thievery they committed.

BQ: I refuse to listen to them anymore and now realize how stupid I was to think they were better than The Who!

BQ2: Robert Plant is one of the most irritating singers with one of the most limited ranges in rock. He sounds like Michael Jackson and suffers from the same problem: an inability to sing in a low register! The only other singer who might be worse is Geddy Lee. I saw Robert Plant and The Honeydrippers live, too, and he has no ability to interact with an audience. He stands neutrally still with no emotion while he performs.

BQ3: Too many excellent guitarists get over-looked because of him and, NO, his solo in the stolen Stairway To Heaven is not the greatest solo in history! Yes, his guitar skills are overblown at the expense of other great guitarists.

BQ4: I am 51 and I know my teenager loves a wide array of music. Her favourite current band is IN THIS MOMENT, but she has a healthy respect for QUEEN, THE DOORS, HEART, SUPERTRAMP, JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, and other classic rock bands. Once in a while she likes pop, too, and that tells me she has an open mind and a willingness to love music because it is music. All the more power to her.

I'm gonna be totally honest. I HATE Led Zeppelin. I swear, everytime I hear one of their songs I want to rip my fu*king ears off. I can never understand why they get so much praise. Their music is boring, repetitive, and totally overplayed.

BQ: If I were forced at gunpoint to pick a favorite song I would probably choose Immigrant Song, but I really don't like any of their music whatsoever.

BQ2: I personally dislike his vocals. He's not a terrible singer but just not what I like.

BQ3: Jimmy Page is one of the most overrated musicians on the planet. There are literally millions of other guitarists out there who are better than him both in skill and creativity.

BQ4: I would probably agree with them on the Kanye West part, but honestly I really wouldn't care. People are allowed to think whatever they want.

One of the best and my favorites! They are overplayed I'll give you that. Zeppelin 2 is my favorite album of theirs
