Question:
Need reasons why John Bonham is the greatest drummer of all time.?

So me and my friend are listening to music, and I told him that John Bonham is the greatest drummer of all time, and he said to me that Lars Ulrich is. So I keep telling him reasons why Bonham is better and I already told him these:
1)He built his own drum set at the age of 5 and learned by the sound and the rhythm. If something sounded bad, he changed his beat/rhythm.
2)He went down in history as one of the greatest drummers of all time.

I didn't tell him that Bonham only used one bass pedal because he was fast enough to use one instead of 2 or more. I also need more reasons. Can someone give me any?

you and your friend are both clueless about drumming.

Lars Ulrich is only one of the most popular drummers but not nearly the best of all time. Granted that he has distinguished himself from other drummers by developing a sort of peculiar sound. I myself can play all the Metallica songs, it's not hard.

John Bonham is considered more than anything a pioneer of the genre. Though complex beats were not that unusual when he started doing sessions, he is thought to be the first to play so loud.

If you really wanna know what the best drumming sounds like, check out Thomas Pridgen, the current drummer of The Mars Volta. Listen to the album The Bedlam in Goliath.

Lars Ulrich was asked who he believed the all time greatest drummer was during an interview that took place in 2008. Lars' answer was "John Bonham, no question about it".

He did things that were quite innovative for the time, like lining his massive 26" kick drum ( most guys use 22) with tin foil for more attack, and playing 5 minute improv drum solos. He blazed the trail and really set the standard for what constitutes "heavy" drumming. There were guys in his time that were just as good and more technically sound, but none played with his intensity, and I don't think anyone will debate that in concert, he was the loudest. He was the heaviness in Led Zeppelin and his style really gave all those great songs their larger than life feel.

Lars has it easy as the drummer of Metallica. Almost everything they've ever written is in 4's and 8's. They never groove, they never jam, they never improv, they never experiment with different styles like the blues or eastern ( Zep does all of those things). It's all pretty straightforward with the emphasis on the guitar work. I don't know of any serious drummers who regard Lars as an "important" figure in the world of drumming. Don't get me wrong, I love Metallica and will debate to the death that Master of Puppets is the most important metal album of all time, but Lars really just held it down like he's supposed to and has never really knocked my socks off.

Dude, Bonham is the only drummer I can THINK of who recorded an ENTIRE song on a rock album which consists ONLY of drums ("Moby Dick"). Let's see Lars Ulrich try and do that - Metallica wouldn't even let him, I bet.
